Why Does Society Judge Anxiety (IMO) 🧐💁🏼‍♀️

In a world that thrives on hustle and achievement, anxiety often hides in plain sight. It’s not a melodramatic whisper; it’s a relentless storm brewing within. Let me share my journey—the raw, unfiltered truth—because understanding anxiety is the first step toward compassion.

Anxiety isn’t a mere case of nerves before a presentation. It’s a symphony of racing thoughts, pounding heartbeats, and a gnawing fear of judgment. Society, with its well-intentioned ignorance, often dismisses anxiety as weakness. But let me tell you, it takes immense strength to battle invisible demons.

In the fluorescent-lit corridors of corporate life, anxiety tiptoes alongside me. When I hesitate to speak up in meetings, it’s not incompetence—it’s anxiety gripping my vocal cords. And when colleagues raise eyebrows at my frequent breaks, they don’t see the panic attacks I silently endure in restroom stalls. Society labels us as “unproductive,” but we’re warriors fighting battles no one else sees.

Remember school? The place where anxiety danced on my shoulder during exams, whispering, “You’ll fail. You’re not enough.” Teachers praised the confident ones, while I sat there, heart racing, trying to breathe. Society deemed me “overly sensitive,” but they didn’t witness the nights I spent studying, tears blurring the textbooks. Anxiety isn’t a choice; it’s an unwelcome companion.

Why do we hide our anxiety? Because society slaps labels on us: “fragile,” “high-maintenance,” or worse, “attention-seeker.” We’re told to toughen up, as if anxiety were a flimsy curtain we could discard. But it’s woven into our DNA, a part of our story. We’re not weak; we’re resilient souls navigating a turbulent sea.

Therapy became my refuge—a space where I could unravel my tangled thoughts. I learned coping mechanisms: grounding techniques, deep breaths, and self-compassion. Society scoffs at therapy, but it’s my lifeline. And medication? It’s not a crutch; it’s a bridge to stability. We’re not broken; we’re healing.

... Read moreIn today’s fast-paced world, anxiety is often brushed aside as mere nervousness. However, it is much more profound and complex, impacting millions globally. It manifests in various forms, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder, each with its unique challenges. With increasing awareness, it's crucial to recognize the signs of anxiety, which can include avoidance of social situations, physical symptoms like racing heart or sweating, and constant worry. Education around the causes—such as genetic factors, brain chemistry, and environmental influences—can foster understanding and empathy. The role of social media is also significant; while it can spread awareness, it can equally exacerbate feelings of comparison and inadequacy. Acknowledging and addressing anxiety through therapy, medication, or community support can pave the way for recovery. Joining or creating support groups for those with similar experiences can also provide a sense of belonging and understanding. By fostering open conversations about mental health, we not only help ourselves but also create a more compassionate society, one that recognizes the strength in vulnerability and the journey of healing. It is essential to continue advocating for mental health awareness, as understanding anxiety and supporting each other can lead to meaningful change.

Ppl need to be more aware of mental illness and that yes, it’s in your brain, but your brain is an organ like any other in your body

Overlayed on a rocky ground, the image presents questions for personal success definition, such as what the soul craves and when one feels most alive. It suggests success can be stillness, freedom, connection, creating, healing, exploring, or simply being. A Lemon8 logo is present.
Against a blurred background of white blossoms on a tree, the image prompts the viewer to ask: 'What does success feel like in your body, your heart, your soul?' A Lemon8 logo and username are at the bottom left.
