Interview Prep: “Tell Me About a Time” Framework

After “Tell me about yourself,” some of the next most common interview questions follow the “Tell me about a time” format.

Answering the “tell me about a time” interview questions can leave people feeling a little stuck, or a lot rambly, but there is a great way to approach these questions.

SOAR!

Here’s how this works: To answer the “tell me about a time” interview questions, you break down your story using the SOAR acronym.

SITUATION: Where were you? What was going on?

OBSTACLE: What was the problem?

ACTION: What did you do to solve the problem?

RESULT: What were the results of your actions?

Try outlining some of your best accomplishments to get interview ready!

... Read moreJob interviews often include behavioral questions that prompt candidates to share specific examples demonstrating their skills and experiences. The 'tell me about a time' format is particularly common, as it helps employers gain insights into a candidate's past behavior as an indicator of future performance. Using the SOAR method — Situation, Obstacle, Action, and Result — allows candidates to structure their answers in a clear and compelling manner. When approaching these questions, start by setting the context (Situation): Describe where you were and the context of the task at hand. Then, address the challenge you faced (Obstacle): What issue did you need to solve, and why was it significant? Next, delve into the actions you took (Action): Highlight your role and the steps you implemented. Finally, conclude with the outcome (Result): What was the result of your actions? Be sure to discuss any quantifiable successes, as this adds credibility to your response and leaves a strong impression on the interviewer. Using this structured approach not only makes your responses more effective but also helps your confidence grow, enabling you to present your experiences in a way that resonates with potential employers.
