helpful ways to prep for a new semester 📚✨

A new school year is quickly approaching which is super exciting but can also be anxiety provoking. In my experience, prepping for the semester is a great way to relieve this stress!

Some easy ways to prepare for the upcoming semester:

📚 Make a DUE DATE tracker!

I use Google Sheets and it took literally less than five minutes to make! Once all of my Canvas pages open, I'll go through all of my syllabuses and stick all of my due dates into the tracker. Each week I go through this spreadsheet and break my assignments into smaller pieces to work on.

📚 Use a planner to break task into small chunks!

I made mine on Google Docs and it was really easy to make! This planner is DIFFERENT from my due date tracker because I update the planner weekly based on what I need to focus on that week. I think the planner is more flexible than the due date tracker, BUT I like having both!

📚 Make a study schedule you can stick to!

I know that I'll stick to a study schedule/routine if I have it written down. I've also found it easier to stick to when it's the same every single week. When you make yours, remember it should be something you can STICK TO without constantly feeling BURNED OUT.

📚 Read former students' experience in the class!

You can look at Course Forum and Rate My Professor!! Most of these reviews were written to try and give useful advice to future students. Ignore any reviews that seem extreme!!! By doing this, you can get a better idea of how much time you'll have to spend working on that class each week!!

... Read moreIt's one thing to know you need to prepare for a new semester, but actually translating those general tips into a functional weekly routine, especially for those busy Monday through Friday schedules, can feel overwhelming. I've been there! My due date tracker is a lifesaver for knowing what is due, but the real magic happens when I use my weekly planner to figure out when I'm going to get things done. Let's talk about turning those "MUST academic prep tips for a new semester" into actionable daily steps. For me, every Sunday evening is my sacred "weekly planning session." I start by looking at my Google Sheets due date tracker. What's coming up this week? Are there any major assignments or tests? Then, using my planner (which I love to customize on Google Docs, just like in the original article!), I break down those larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks that I can realistically tackle each day, Monday through Friday. For instance, if I have a research paper due next Friday, I won't just write "research paper" on my planner. Instead, for Monday, I might list "Outline research paper for [Course Name]." On Tuesday, it could be "Find 3 scholarly sources for research paper." Wednesday: "Draft introduction and first body paragraph." This way, by the time Friday rolls around, the paper isn't a daunting mountain, but a series of small hills I've already climbed. Creating a "STUDY SCHEDULE you can actually stick to" is crucial here. My planner helps me visualize my week. I'll block out specific times for study sessions. For example, if I have a "Framework for Monday's Schedule" in mind, it might look like this: 9-11 AM: Class, 11 AM-12 PM: Lunch/Break, 12-2 PM: Focused study on [Course 1], 2-3 PM: Gym, 3-5 PM: Work on assignments for [Course 2]. This time-blocking strategy helps ensure that I'm dedicating specific, uninterrupted time to my academics, rather than just hoping I'll get to it. I've learned that flexibility is just as important as structure. Sometimes, a Monday plan doesn't go exactly as expected. Maybe a class runs late, or I get an unexpected meeting. Instead of letting it derail my entire week, I use my planner to quickly re-evaluate. Can I shift that study block to Tuesday afternoon? Is there a half-hour I can carve out on Wednesday morning? The key is not to dwell on a missed slot but to proactively adjust. My personal rule is to check my planner every morning and evening, just for a quick five-minute review to stay on track. Another tip I've found incredibly helpful, especially when preparing for specific mid-week assignments, is to incorporate short "review" periods. For example, every Thursday evening, I'll spend 30-45 minutes just reviewing notes from the week's classes and doing a quick check of my assignments due Friday. This really solidifies the information and helps me catch anything I might have missed. And don't forget the power of those former student experiences! Reading reviews on Rate My Professor or course forums can give you realistic expectations about weekly workload for a specific class. If everyone says "this class has heavy readings every week," I know to block out extra time on my planner for those specific days. It’s all about informed planning to make your Monday-Friday academic life smoother and less stressful. By combining a solid due date tracker with a flexible, detailed weekly planner, you're not just prepping for the semester; you're setting yourself up for consistent success, one productive week at a time.
