Dealbreakers aren’t the opposite of love… they’re part of clarity. 💬

Just because a relationship is open doesn’t mean you have to be open to everything.

Having boundaries doesn’t limit your partner’s freedom — it simply defines what you are willing to participate in.

You’re not controlling anyone.

You’re just being honest about yourself. 🤍

And yes… some things are still a hard no.

Even in polyamory. Even in relationship anarchy.

That’s not rigidity. That’s self-respect. 🌿

... Read moreFrom my own experience navigating polyamory and relationship anarchy, I’ve realized that setting boundaries is not just about saying no — it’s about safeguarding your emotional wellbeing and clarity in complex relational dynamics. When I first entered an open relationship, I was worried that firm dealbreakers might be perceived as controlling or restrictive. But I soon understood that being honest about what I wasn’t comfortable with helped me avoid resentment and emotional exhaustion later. One hard lesson was differentiating between flexibility and self-neglect. Ethical non-monogamy often emphasizes autonomy and freedom, but freedom without limits can blur your own needs. For example, I once felt uneasy about certain types of intimacy that my partner was exploring with others. Speaking up about this wasn’t a rejection of openness; it was a way to communicate my boundaries so we could both make informed choices. This honesty fostered mutual respect rather than control. My partner still had full freedom but now our relationship had transparency, which strengthened trust. It also helped me practice self-respect by recognizing that some requests simply don’t align with my emotional capacity — and that’s okay. Moreover, expressing dealbreakers early can prevent the buildup of unspoken discomfort. I’ve noticed that keeping silent “for the sake of the relationship” only leads to confusion and hidden resentments. Being candid, though hard at first, nurtures healthier connections. Ultimately, ethical non-monogamy is grounded in consent and clarity — not unlimited flexibility. Your limits don’t diminish your love or respect for your partner; they define the boundaries within which authentic and sustainable relationships thrive. Knowing your hard "no's" empowers you to love honestly and fully, without guilt or moral compromise.
