How do you deal with self-comparison in college?

The nature of academics includes a certain degree of comparison almost inherently. To get accepted, you must be compared and measured against your peers, and I’m someone who has always struggled with self comparison which only contributes to my anxiety. And that’s not something that goes away with a progression into post-grad education, especially medical school.

For me, it’s so important to be aware of how easy it is to slip into a comparison mindset because it prevents me from growing and staying focused on what’s most important, which is my own success and learning in the pursuit of this degree, so this is what I do!

I do what I can to stay present in the moment and avoid dwelling on things that aren’t in my control anymore, like the exam I just took for example. I also spend time each week reflecting and refocusing my energy so I stay focused on my own success without comparison to others. Staying in that mindset only makes me feel worse about myself and the imposter syndrome I deal with on a regular basis can’t handle additional input.

What do you do that helps? Is this something you feel like you struggle with?

... Read moreIn college, self-comparison can often take a toll on students' mental well-being. It's crucial to recognize that while some degree of comparison is natural in academic environments, it shouldn't define your self-worth. Spending time alone can provide clarity and help you recharge. Journaling is another powerful tool; it allows you to reflect on your feelings, track your progress, and cultivate gratitude for your accomplishments, no matter how small. Focusing on your unique journey rather than constantly benchmarking against others can foster a healthier mindset. Engage in activities that make you feel fulfilled and bring you joy, whether it's pursuing hobbies, connecting with friends, or participating in campus events related to your interests. Additionally, consider seeking support through counseling services or joining groups that discuss these challenges openly. By embracing your individuality and consciously redirecting your thoughts, you can combat the negative impacts of self-comparison and thrive during your college experience.

Comparison is the worst! I always have dealt with comparison to others and I still do! One thing that really helps is just relaxing and just realizing that you are your own person and you are doing the best you can. Better yourself for YOURSELF! Do things to make you fall in love with you again! This is your own
