During the three years of British Columbia's drug decriminalization pilot, many hopes were placed on reducing stigma and improving access to health services for people who use drugs. However, experience shows that decriminalization alone may not suffice to address the complex challenges of addiction and substance use. From my perspective, a comprehensive approach combining health-centered support and law enforcement against trafficking is essential. In practice, reducing fear of criminal charges can encourage individuals to seek help more readily, but without ample addiction treatment resources, progress is limited. British Columbia’s decision to pivot toward strengthening mental health and addiction care sends a clear message about prioritizing comprehensive services over solely changing legal status. I have observed that when communities offer robust counseling, harm reduction programs, and accessible treatment facilities, outcomes improve significantly. Moreover, continued police focus on drug traffickers helps to disrupt supply chains, potentially decreasing availability and harm. This shift also reflects the importance of evaluating social policies based on real-world impact over time. While decriminalization can be part of the solution, investments in mental health infrastructure and addiction treatment clinics will likely yield more lasting benefits for individuals and public safety. For anyone interested in drug policy reform, British Columbia’s pilot highlights the need for integrated strategies that address both the health and social aspects of substance use. As this policy evolves, ongoing community engagement and evidence-based initiatives will be key to supporting people affected by addiction and improving overall outcomes.
