Why I Took A Year Off From Overwatch

I’m curious, if you ever stepped away from a game you used to play nonstop, how did it feel coming back? Drop your experience below!

My old mains a year ago were mercy, windowmaker, and Illari.

But now I find myself playing Ana, Ashe, and Dva. This game still brings back a familiar anger I only ever get with Overwatch lol but it was fun to come back and try all the new changes and loot boxes!

... Read moreTaking a break from gaming is something many of us can relate to, especially when a game becomes a huge part of our lives, like spending almost 4,000 hours on a single title! I've noticed a lot of chatter in the gaming community about why players step away, and whether it's truly worth it in the long run. Sometimes it's the grind, other times it's the feeling that the game is getting toxic, and occasionally, life just happens. From my own observations and chats with fellow gamers, the reasons for needing a break often boil down to a few key areas. Burnout is a big one – when playing feels more like a chore than fun. Then there's the competitive pressure and, yes, the toxicity that can creep into online communities, making the experience less enjoyable. For me, stepping away from Overwatch for a year was a way to reset and see if that passion was still there. It's a common question: did it make you fall back in love with the game, or did you move on completely? One of the biggest benefits I've seen from taking a gaming hiatus is the mental reset it provides. It's like clearing your head and coming back with a fresh perspective. You might find yourself rediscovering old hobbies, picking up new ones, or just having more time for real-life connections. Some friends even told me they felt less stressed and more focused after reducing their screen time. When I finally decided to go back to Overwatch, it felt different. The new characters and changes were exciting to explore without the pressure I used to put on myself. If you're thinking about taking a break, or have just returned, here are a few things I've learned. First, don't feel guilty about it! Gaming should be fun, and if it's not, it's okay to step away. Second, consider why you're taking the break. Is it for mental health, to explore other interests, or because the game itself isn't what it used to be? This can help you decide if and when you want to return. Finally, when you do return, be open to the changes. Games evolve, and your preferences might too. You might find new main characters you love, or you might realize it's truly time to say goodbye to that particular title. Ultimately, the question of whether taking a break was 'worth it' is deeply personal. For me, it allowed me to appreciate Overwatch in a new light, even with its familiar frustrations. It reminded me that gaming is about enjoyment, and sometimes, a little distance is exactly what you need to find that joy again. What are your thoughts on gaming breaks? I'd love to hear your experiences!

I totally get the Overwatch anger! It's like a love-hate relationship we all have with that game.
