Make Cute Cross-Stitch Patterns on Your iPad🌸

Hey everyone! 🎨🧵

If you love cross-stitching and digital tools, this post is for you!

I really enjoy cross-stitching a lot. It’s meditative for me. But I like to cross-stitch very specific things, i.e. my favourite characters. Several times I haven’t been able to find a cross-stitch pattern that meet my criteria of cuteness.

So I’ve been making custom patterns from my favourite artworks using an app on my iPad, and I’m excited to share the how-to with you all. It’s easy, fun, free, and perfect for your next project. Swipe to get started!

———

Notes:

> The app is called Dottable and it is free on the App Store.

> What you’re doing is pixel art, so if you’re unfamiliar with the basics, practice with a simpler image first.

(It took me a little less than an hour to complete this piece.)

> Once you’re done making your pattern, you can export it with the grid to any format you like.

(I personally prefer to just create a new layer and then mark off what I’ve stitched over the pattern to keep track of where I am.)

> I like to take my pattern with me to a craft store like Michael’s and pick out thread colours that feel right. But if that’s not something you would enjoy, there are several online tools that will take your pattern and provide a list of appropriate colours.

Happy Stitching!

... Read moreI absolutely adore cross-stitching, and creating my own patterns on my iPad has truly revolutionized my crafting experience. While the main article dives into the fantastic Dottable app, I wanted to share a few more personal insights and tips I’ve picked up along the way to make your custom patterns even more stunning and easier to stitch. It’s all about empowering you to craft exactly what you envision! First off, choosing the right source image is crucial for a smooth process. You might have seen the original article mention the 'blurry mess' that can happen with initial conversions. To minimize this, I've found that images with clear outlines, distinct color blocks, and less intricate shading work best. Think cartoons, simple logos, or stylized illustrations rather than highly detailed photographs. When you’re using Dottable, remember it's essentially a 'pixel art editor,' so the clearer the original pixel definition, the better your cross-stitch pattern will look. I always try to pick images that naturally lend themselves to a blocky, simplified aesthetic. Once you have your image converted, that "blurry mess" stage is where the real artistry begins! My personal workflow always involves immediately using the 'Add New Layer' feature. This is a game-changer! On this new layer, I painstakingly create a clean 'Outline' of my design. It's like tracing, but with pixels. You can toggle the visibility of your original blurry layer to use it as a guide, but don't be afraid to simplify lines and shapes. This outlining step is key to getting crisp, stitchable edges for your 'Custom Cross-Stitch Patterns.' It might seem tedious at first, but trust me, it saves so much headache later! After the outline is solid, I move on to filling in colors. The 'Dropper Tool' is your best friend here. Instead of trying to match colors from scratch, use the dropper to pick colors directly from your original blurry image (on its own layer) or from a desired color palette you have in mind. I try to limit my color palette as much as possible for cross-stitch, usually sticking to 15-25 colors for most projects. This makes thread selection much simpler later on and gives a classic cross-stitch look. For darker areas, sometimes I layer a few shades of the same color to add depth without adding too many different threads. This iPad tutorial really makes it easy to experiment! Finally, getting your pattern ready for stitching. The original article mentions taking your pattern to a craft store like Michael's for thread selection, which I also love to do! I usually print out a small color key from my finished Dottable design to help me match up DMC or other thread colors. If you prefer to stay digital, there are also fantastic online tools where you can upload your pattern, and they’ll suggest thread colors for you. For me, using the 'Free' Dottable app to create these patterns and then having a printed or digital guide with my chosen colors completely streamlines my cross-stitching process. It feels so empowering to stitch a design that's truly mine, from start to finish, all thanks to my trusty iPad.
