Quilt Block Friday week 8: Aunt Eliza star (HST variation)

Instructions:

*the measurements are for an unfinished block size of 9”*

-colour A cut 4 squares at 2 5/8” (for the corners) & 6 squares at 3 1/4” (for the HST)

-colour B cut 6 squares at 3 1/4” (for the HST)

-Create Half Square Triangles: layer all 3 1/4” squares (1 of colour A and one of colour B), mark a diagonal center line and sew 1/4” on each size of the line. Repeats for all squares. Cut along marked center line, press open new square. Trim all HST to 2 5/8”

-lay out squares into aunt Eliza star formation

- see together (starting with top row, sewing all squares into rows and then sew rows together) make sure to press your seams in between?sewing the rows together.

-final pressing and you’re done!

... Read moreQuilting the Aunt Eliza star block has been one of my favorite projects to dive into, especially when exploring the Half Square Triangle (HST) variation. When I first started this block, I found the process somewhat daunting due to the precise measurements and seam allowances required. However, following clear cutting instructions for Colour A and Colour B squares, and consistently pressing seams between sewing rows, truly helps in maintaining accuracy and crisp lines in the final design. One tip I discovered is to use a quarter-inch presser foot for sewing the HST seams precisely. This small adjustment significantly improved the consistency of my blocks. After marking the center diagonal line on my layered squares, I made sure to sew just on either side of the line, then carefully cut along that line to create the half square triangles before pressing them open. This tedious process becomes easier with practice and is essential for achieving perfect HST units trimmed to 2 5/8”. Laying out the blocks in the traditional Aunt Eliza star pattern felt rewarding when finally sewing the rows together. I recommend taking care to press your seams strategically, such as pressing seams alternately up and down between rows. This technique reduces bulk where intersections meet and helps the block to lie flat. Personally, documenting my steps and improvements week to week has boosted my confidence. It’s satisfying to see the progress from my first block to the most recent one where everything fits so neatly. If you’re starting this series or project, remember that quilting is as much about patience and gradual improvement as it is about the finished product. Keep practicing, and soon you’ll enjoy creating beautiful quilt blocks like the Aunt Eliza star with your unique variations!
