My biggest lessons from 5 years of renting!

I am starting my 5th September as a renter, and have lived in 3 apartments over those years. Here are a few things I've learned, my tips and tricks, and things I wouldn't do again:

- less is more. less clutter, less decor, less stuff to have to move!!!!! it's the way to go

- YOU NEED NATURAL LIGHT. I can't emphasize this enough, you need light & windows & fresh air!!! Don't settle for a room with no window.

- make it home!!!!! Even if it's short term, it's worth making it cozy and homey and enjoying the time you do have.

... Read moreRenting can feel like a temporary phase, but making your rental feel like home is key to enjoying where you live, no matter how long you stay. One of the biggest takeaways from five years of renting is that "less is more" truly applies. Minimizing clutter and decorations isn't just about aesthetics—it saves you time, energy, and stress when moving out. Keeping your space simple allows you to focus on what truly makes you comfortable. Natural light is another crucial factor that greatly impacts your well-being and happiness in your rented space. Rooms without windows or sufficient daylight can feel cramped and gloomy, affecting both mood and productivity. When searching for a rental, prioritize properties with abundant natural light and good airflow, as this can significantly improve your living quality. Even if your rental stay is short-term, personalizing your space can create a sense of calm and belonging. Adding inexpensive touches like soft textiles, plants, or meaningful decor can help bridge the gap between a generic apartment and your cherished home. Small changes like rearranging furniture to maximize sunlight or using removable wallpaper for an accent wall can make a big difference without violating lease agreements. It’s also valuable to develop a mindset of flexibility and adaptation. Renting often means moving, so learning to embrace change and enjoy the process of making each space your own can reduce frustration. This mental shift enables renters to live fully in the moment and appreciate each new environment. Overall, these lessons—embracing minimalism, valuing natural light, and making your space cozy—can help anyone become a more content and resourceful renter. Remember, your rental is your home, even if just for a season, and investing in that mindset improves your experience and happiness.
