MAKING APPLESAUCE FOR MY 7-MONTH OLD

HOW I MADE IT:

1. Wash and peel your apples

2. Cut up your apples into smaller pieces

3. Add water to a pot (I used just enough to cover the bottom of the pot) along with your apple slices, set to medium heat, and cover

4. Once your apple pieces reach a soft consistency, add them to your blender along with either breastmilk, formula, or water

5. Blend!

6. Serve or store

My daughter absolutely LOVED this applesauce! I had a suspicion she would be a fan of this one considering she loved the Gerber apple purée she had a few times before I started making her food, but I think she liked the homemade one even better than the store bought. Honestly though i’m not super surprised because this is a combo of her two favorite things: apples and milk- it’s her dream come true 😂

Will definitely be making this one again!

... Read moreWhen I first started making baby food, I was a little overwhelmed, but making homemade applesauce quickly became one of my favorite things to do for my little one! It's so rewarding to know exactly what's going into their tiny tummies – no hidden sugars or preservatives. Beyond the simple steps, here are a few more tips I've picked up that might help you too, especially when you're making unsweetened applesauce for your baby. Choosing the Right Apples for Baby Choosing the right apples makes a big difference in the natural sweetness and flavor of your baby's applesauce. I usually go for sweet varieties like Honeycrisp (they're so crisp and juicy and show up beautifully in photos!), Fuji, or Gala. These apples naturally sweeten the purée, so there's absolutely no need for added sugar, which is a big plus for baby's developing taste buds and overall health. I always avoid tart apples like Granny Smith for infant purées unless I'm mixing them with much sweeter fruits for older toddlers. Peeling and Cutting for Perfection For peeling, a good, sharp peeler makes the job a breeze. I make sure to get all the skin off to ensure the smoothest texture possible for my 7-month-old. Any bits of skin, even small ones, can create an undesirable texture or even pose a slight choking hazard for very young infants. When it comes to cutting, aim for small, uniform pieces – this is crucial for even cooking. I learned that chopping them into roughly 1-inch cubes works best for quick and consistent softening. This way, every piece cooks at about the same rate, resulting in a perfectly tender batch ready for blending. Cooking Methods Beyond Boiling While the original recipe suggests adding water to the bottom of the pot, you can also steam the apples. Steaming helps retain more nutrients compared to boiling directly in water, though both methods work great for softening. To steam, just place a steamer basket in a pot with about an inch of water, add your apple pieces, cover, and steam until they're fork-tender. Either way, the goal is super soft apples that blend easily into a smooth purée for your infant. Keep an eye on them – you want them soft, not mushy or browned. Achieving the Perfect Blending Consistency When blending, I start with just a little liquid – whether it's breastmilk, formula, or water – and add more gradually until I get the perfect smooth consistency for my 7-month-old. For younger babies, a completely smooth purée is key to prevent choking hazards. As they get older, closer to toddler age, you can blend it less for a slightly lumpier or chunkier texture, which is great for introducing new textures and encouraging chewing. Always do a quick taste test and check the texture yourself before serving it to your little one. Smart Storage Solutions for Homemade Baby Food One of the best parts about making a batch of homemade applesauce is how easy it is to store, making meal prep a breeze! I absolutely love using silicone ice cube trays (just like the ones you might see in photos of baby food prep). Once the freshly made applesauce cools down, I spoon it into the compartments and freeze it. Each cube is a perfect single serving! Once fully frozen, I pop them out and transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. This way, you always have a healthy, homemade meal ready to go. Homemade applesauce usually stays fresh in the freezer for up to 3 months. When I'm ready to serve, I just thaw a cube in the fridge overnight or gently warm it up on the stovetop or in a microwave (checking for hot spots, of course!). Introducing Applesauce to Your Little One When introducing applesauce (or any new solid food), always start with just a small spoonful. Watch for any signs of allergies, though apples are generally well-tolerated. It's such a joy to see their little faces light up with new flavors and textures! This unsweetened homemade applesauce is a fantastic and wholesome first food option that many babies adore.
