Guyanese 🇬🇾Egg Custard or Custard Pie

Guyanese egg custard is a traditional Caribbean dessert made with simple ingredients — eggs, milk, sugar, and spices — baked until soft, creamy, and slightly firm on top. It’s a popular old-fashioned sweet in Guyanese homes, often served after Sunday lunch or during holidays. 🇬🇾🍮

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare a baking dish (like an 8-inch square or round pan) and place it in a larger pan for a water bath.

2. Warm the milk:

Heat the milk gently on the stove until it’s warm (not boiling). Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

3. Beat the eggs:

In a large bowl, whisk eggs until well mixed. Add sugar, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt.

4. Combine:

Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly to prevent curdling.

5. Strain (optional but traditional):

6. Pour and bake:

Pour mixture into your baking dish. Place that dish into the larger pan and fill the outer pan halfway with hot water (this water bath prevents cracking and overcooking).

7. Bake:

Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

(The center should be just set but still slightly wobbly.)

8. Cool and serve:

Let it cool to room temperature, then chill in the fridge if you prefer it cold.

Sprinkle a little extra nutmeg on top before serving.
