Closet Clean Out
Teddy’s unwell, so while he chills and I’ve got the motivation I’m tackling this closet. #tidy #closetcleanout #clean #organize
Okay, so we've all been there, right? That moment you open your closet doors and a wave of 'where do I even start?!' washes over you. My own "messy wardrobe" often reaches peak chaos, especially when life throws a curveball, like when my little one was feeling under the weather. It's funny how sometimes a distraction, even a big task like a closet clean-out, can be just what you need to feel productive! My coat closet, for instance, had become a prime example of a 'dumping ground.' Shoes are everywhere – sound familiar? Plus, with winter gear, summer essentials like sunscreen, and even those snow tubes for seasonal fun, it quickly turns into a jumbled mess. If you're staring down your own overflowing closet, here are some things I've learned that really help turn that 'messy wardrobe' into an organized, functional space: First things first: Set the Scene. Pick a day when you have a good chunk of uninterrupted time. Put on some motivating music, grab a few empty bins or laundry baskets (for 'keep,' 'donate,' 'toss,' and 'relocate' piles), and mentally prepare to be ruthless – but kind to yourself! Next, the most daunting step: Empty Everything Out! Yes, everything. Seriously. It’s the only way to truly see what you have and the potential of your space. Lay it all out on your bed or floor. This is where you’ll probably find things you forgot you owned or that sweater you’ve been looking for all season! Now for the Sorting Session. This is where the magic happens. Keep: Only items that fit well, make you feel good, and you actually wear. Be honest with yourself! Donate/Sell: Items in good condition that you no longer need or wear. Like that coat my little one outgrew – it’s serving no purpose just sitting there! Toss: Anything stained, ripped beyond repair, or truly worn out. Relocate: Items that don't belong in the closet at all. That stack of books? Your partner's random gadget? Find their rightful homes. Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to Organize Strategically. Group Like Items: I love to organise coats by length and person – it makes it so much easier to find what you need. Do the same for shirts, pants, accessories. Maximize Vertical Space: Those top shelves are often a wasted opportunity or, as I know, a 'dumping ground.' Use clear bins or shelf dividers for seasonal items (like those snow tubes when it's not winter!), extra bedding, or seldom-used accessories. Tame the Shoe Chaos: If shoes are everywhere in your closet like mine were, invest in a simple shoe rack, clear shoe boxes, or even an over-the-door organizer. Getting them off the floor instantly makes the space feel tidier. Seasonal Swaps: For items like *winter gear for summer gear sunscreen*, consider having dedicated storage for off-season items. Vacuum-seal bags can be a lifesaver for bulky winter coats and blankets, storing them away until needed. Finally, The Finishing Touches & Maintenance. Before putting everything back, take a moment to sweep up the dust and wipe down shelves. A clean slate feels so much better! Once everything is neatly back in its place, try to maintain it. A quick tidy-up every few days, hanging things back up immediately, and doing a mini-declutter each season can prevent your closet from ever returning to its 'messy wardrobe' state. It's a journey, not a one-time event, but the feeling of opening an organized closet? Pure bliss! It really proves that even when everyday life gets chaotic, creating a little order in your personal space can bring a surprising amount of calm.
