Many Indians still have an incorrect perception of Canada. They see their uncles, aunts, cousins, siblings, and friends relocating to Canada and sending back photos and videos of first-world infrastructure and natural beauty. Below the surface though, there are many aspects of Canada that are severely dysfunctional. One such aspect is Canada's health care system. At first glance, this system may seem impressive because it's free for citizens. In reality though, it's broken and in the midst of a crisis that has resulted in many Canadians struggling to get the care they need.

Many Indian people don't realise this before moving to Canada. Nobody told them that they could wait up to 8 hours in the ER waiting room of a Canadian hospital if they experience a health emergency. Nobody told them that annually, multiple people expire while waiting for care in the ER.

But once they've become NRIs or given up their Indian citizenship and become Canadians, it's too late to turn back.

... Read moreHaving lived in Canada for several years, I can personally attest to the challenges faced by immigrants confronting the healthcare system here. On the surface, Canada's universal healthcare is a major draw, especially for newcomers from countries without similar benefits. However, the reality often differs greatly from expectations. One of the most frustrating experiences many face is the excessive wait times in emergency rooms. Stories like that of Prashanth Sreekumar, who waited eight hours in an Edmonton ER before passing away, are heartbreaking but unfortunately not isolated incidents. It’s a stark reminder that despite free treatment, access to timely care can be severely compromised. During my early days in Canada, I witnessed friends and relatives endure waits of five to ten hours in emergency rooms, often for critical conditions. This is largely due to systemic issues such as hospital overcrowding, shortage of family doctors, and the phenomenon of 'boarded patients'—patients admitted but stuck in the ER due to lack of available beds in other hospital units. These factors compound to create bottlenecks that delay urgent care. Another aspect not commonly discussed is the high rate of patients leaving ERs without being seen because of the wait. This sometimes leads to worsening conditions and repeat visits that are more severe. The mental and physical toll on patients, many of whom are new immigrants unfamiliar with navigating such a complex system, can be overwhelming. Moreover, healthcare staff burnout exacerbates these delays. Nurses and doctors stretched too thin struggle to provide the level of care they aspire to. Observing this firsthand, I’ve learned that the problem isn’t just infrastructure, but also human resource constraints. For fellow Indians considering relocation, it’s crucial to understand that Canada's healthcare, while free, is under considerable strain and may not offer the immediate or comprehensive care you might expect. Planning for private health insurance or supplemental coverage, and establishing relationships with family doctors early, can help mitigate some risks. In conclusion, embracing Canada means being aware of its medical system’s current struggles. Balancing the allure of a better life with preparedness for these systemic challenges can make the transition smoother and safer for immigrants.
