Ginny Lam spent years caring for her mother, supporting her through illness and staying by her side until the end. Despite her dedication, there was an underlying imbalance in how she was valued, shaped by traditional beliefs that placed her brother above her simply because he was male. When her mother passed away in 2021, this became painfully clear, as the will left most of the estate to her brother while giving Ginny a much smaller share.
Refusing to accept this, Ginny challenged the decision in court, seeking recognition for her role and fairness in how she was treated. The British Columbia Supreme Court ruled in her favor, stating that cultural traditions cannot justify unequal treatment. The case became more than just a dispute over inheritance, highlighting the importance of equality and showing that a daughter’s contribution should carry the same weight as a son’s.
