My Unopened Emails Cause Me Anxiety

#adhd

3/9 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who has faced the overwhelm of unopened emails, especially with ADHD, I know how anxiety builds up as the unread count climbs. It’s not just about the emails — it’s a typical response where your brain views the task as threatening, triggering avoidance behaviors. Over time, unopened emails can feel like an insurmountable mountain, making it harder to even start. One strategy that helped me break the cycle was to set a simple rule: open each email only once and immediately categorize it. I used three folders—Urgent, Not Urgent, and Trash. This helped reduce decision fatigue since I wasn’t trying to address everything at once, just deciding the level of attention needed. Taking a quick photo or screenshot of important details directly to my phone made it easier to retrieve information without needing to keep emails open or cluttered. Another tip is to schedule an "email time"—just 10 minutes a day dedicated to processing your inbox. The key is consistency; little, steady progress beats occasional binge sessions that often increase stress. Lastly, remember that perfection isn’t the goal. Managing unopened emails with ADHD is about creating systems that reduce anxiety and increase your sense of control. By embracing these methods, I turned what felt like "anxiety: the collection" into manageable daily routines. If you feel stuck, you're not alone—taking small steps is already a huge win.
