UPPER BODY WARMUP ROUTINE FOR BEFORE YOUR WORKOUT!
You might’ve heard about the importance of warming up and stretching before your workouts and I’m here to remind you again to not skip it, just take 5-10 minutes minimum before your workout to prime your body for lifting to avoid injuries and activate the muscles and turn them on.
This is a simple, basic warmup almost anyone can do! If you have specific imbalances you may need a slight adjustment to your warmup/mobility routine just an FYI:)
Complete each rep intentionally, same as your workouts. Control and if you can, think of the muscles you’re using during the warmup to activate and turn them on. Who wants to see a warmup for your lower body now 👀
... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why a dynamic upper body warm-up is an absolute game-changer. I used to rush into my workouts, thinking I was saving time, but all I got was stiffness and sometimes even minor aches. Once I started consistently doing a proper warm-up, my lifts improved, and those nagging pains? Gone! It’s not just about going through the motions; it's about preparing your body for the incredible work you're about to do.
You might be wondering, what's the big deal with 'dynamic' warm-ups? Unlike static stretching (holding a stretch for a period), dynamic movements involve controlled, fluid motions that take your joints through their full range of motion. This increases blood flow to your muscles, literally 'waking them up' and improving joint mobility. It's like oiling a machine before you turn it on – everything runs smoother and more efficiently, drastically reducing your risk of injury.
Let me walk you through some of my favorite and most effective dynamic upper body warm-up exercises, many of which I make sure to include in my routine:
Dead Hangs (30-60 seconds): This one is a gem for shoulder health and spinal decompression. Just find a pull-up bar, hang freely, and let gravity do its work. Focus on relaxing your shoulders and letting your lats stretch. It feels incredible and really opens up the upper back.
Band Up & Overs (15 reps): Grab a light resistance band. Start with the band in front of you, arms extended. Keep your arms straight and bring the band overhead and behind you, then back to the front. This is fantastic for shoulder mobility and warming up the rotator cuff muscles. Make sure to control the movement and not just fling the band.
Band Around the Worlds (15 reps): Similar to up & overs, but you're making a full circular motion with the band. Start with the band in front, go overhead, then sweep it down behind you, and return to the front. This really gets your shoulders moving in multiple planes and engages those often-neglected smaller muscles.
Band Pull Aparts (15 reps): Hold a resistance band with both hands, about shoulder-width apart, arms extended in front of you at chest height. Pull the band apart, squeezing your shoulder blades together. This targets your upper back and rear deltoids, essential for good posture and preventing rounded shoulders.
Band Rows (15 reps): Anchor a resistance band or stand on it, holding an end in each hand. Perform a rowing motion, pulling your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades. This is excellent for activating your lats and rhomboids, crucial for any pulling movements in your main workout.
Beyond these specific moves, here are a few extra tips for an effective warm-up:
Mind-Muscle Connection: Don't just swing your limbs. Think about the muscles you're trying to activate. This intentional focus dramatically increases the warm-up's effectiveness.
Listen to Your Body: If something hurts, stop. Warm-ups should feel good, not painful. Adjust the range of motion or intensity as needed.
Consistency is Key: Even on days when you're short on time, try to get in at least 5 minutes. A quick warm-up is always better than no warm-up.
Trust me, investing those extra 5-10 minutes before your workout will pay dividends in performance, injury prevention, and overall well-being. Give this dynamic upper body routine a try and let me know how it transforms your gym sessions!
