First visit postpartum? What to expect:

So you just had your baby? 🥹 Congrats mommas!

I’m Lee, a mom of 2 girls and I just had my postpartum visit.

Here’s a few things we discussed and how my appointment went!

First I had my weight checked, temperature and blood pressure (all were normal! I’ve lost a total of 30 lbs during pregnancy and after birth 🎉)

I was taken to my exam toom. I undressed and waited for my nurse and doctor to come in.

Nurse came and asked me about my mental state, physical wellbeing, and any ideas for conception prevention.

Doctor came. She pressed down on my stomach, examined my breasts, examined my cervix to make sure it’s closed and uterus is back to normal size before being cleared to have sexual activity.

That’s it. The visit is an over, I’ve been cleared to go back to work, go to the gym & have sex.

... Read moreIt’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions heading into your first postpartum check-up. After all the focus has been on your little one, this appointment is all about you and your recovery! I remember feeling a bit nervous, but knowing what to expect really helped. First off, don't hesitate to prepare a list of questions beforehand. You've been through a lot, and it's easy to forget things once you're in the examination room. Think about any discomforts you've had, changes in your body, or anything that's been on your mind regarding your recovery. Your doctor is there to answer these! When you arrive, they'll likely start with routine checks. Weight, blood pressure, and sometimes urine samples are standard. These help your healthcare provider assess your overall physical recovery. Don't stress about the weight; focus on your health! A crucial part of the visit is discussing your mental well-being. Pregnancy and childbirth are huge life changes, and it's common to experience mood shifts. Be honest about how you're feeling – whether it's the 'baby blues' or something more persistent like postpartum depression or anxiety. Your doctor can offer support, resources, or referrals if needed. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. They'll also talk about family planning and contraception. Even if you're not planning another baby right away, it's a good time to discuss your options and what might be suitable for your body and lifestyle post-pregnancy. There are many choices, so don't be afraid to ask about all of them. The physical examination itself typically involves a check of your abdomen to ensure your uterus is shrinking back to its pre-pregnancy size. They might also check your incision if you had a C-section or your perineum if you had a vaginal birth, ensuring everything is healing well. Breast examination is also common, especially if you're breastfeeding, to check for any issues like mastitis or lumps. For many, a pelvic exam will also be part of this visit to check your cervix and ensure it's closed and that your reproductive system is recovering. This is often the part people are most curious about, especially before discussing returning to sexual activity. Remember that poster about the reproductive system that's often in these rooms? It makes sense they'd be checking everything out! Finally, your doctor will usually 'clear' you for various activities. This often includes returning to exercise, work, and sexual activity. However, 'cleared' doesn't always mean 'ready.' Listen to your body and ease back into physical activity gradually. If you're experiencing pain or discomfort, don't push it. It's also a great time to ask about any specific exercises or activities to avoid or embrace. For instance, post-pregnancy core strength often needs attention. Beyond the doctor's office, remember that your postpartum journey extends far beyond this one visit. Continue to prioritize self-care, healthy eating, and getting as much rest as possible (even if it's in short bursts!). Don't hesitate to reach out to your support system, whether it's family, friends, or a new moms' group. Your body has done an incredible thing, and it deserves time, patience, and care to recover fully. And keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms; a quick call to your doctor is always better than worrying. Thinking about overall health, including things like breast cancer screening, is something that will continue to be important for your long-term well-being as a mom.
