Selection of Sandpaper Numbers for Wood and Metal Works
Numbers on sandpaper will indicate the size of the sand grain, with the smaller the number meaning the sand grain is large and coarse, suitable for coarse polishing work, and the greater the number means the sand grain is small and fine, suitable for smooth polishing work.
For woodworking, wood polishing should use the "sandpaper number scavenging" technique, starting with a rough number and then gradually switching to a sequentially finer number, so that scratches from previous numbers can be easily removed and work time saved.
Scrub Coarse or Open Crossbow Finish: No more than 60 or 80 numbers should be used to decorate shapes or remove sharp edges.
General Exfoliating Exfoliating: Use Numbers 80-120 to Smoother the Rough Area
Prepare the skin before painting or coating: use numbers 180-220.
For polishing the wood smoother, or using a polish between layers of the coating to make each layer stick well together.
Polished: Use number 240-400
For Metal Works
Rust scrub: Numbers 36-40 should be used.
It may be slightly dipped in water and then scrub the skin or rust stain to the iron texture.
General Exfoliating Exfoliating: Use Numbers 60-120
Prepare Skin Before Painting: Use Numbers 120-220
Polished: Use No. 220-400

Differences and advantages between water scrubbing sandpaper and dry scrubbing sandpaper
Wet Sandpaper is a sandpaper with a resolution of grains of sand rather than dry, durable, not easy to peel, and is designed to be used while the workpiece is wet.
Advantage: Provides a smooth, non-easily scratched work skin.
Using water together will reduce heat and friction, keep the workpiece intact, and greatly reduce dust problems caused by polishing.
Suitable job: Suitable for steel polishing, to reduce heat and prevent rust.
Includes fine step wood polishing work, or results that require high smoothness.
Dry Sandpaper is a commonly used sandpaper. It is available in many numbers, from coarse to fine. It can be polished on the workpiece without preparing water.
Advantages: Easy to use, convenient, cheap, widely available and quick to polish the workpiece.
Caution: Very distracted dust may occur in the air, and not enough fine numbers can cause scratches on the workpiece.
Proper job: Suitable for wood polishing in the initial step, light polishing work, work requiring fast polishing, or general polishing work.
