I’m still not sure why this has become the thing people focus on since we moved back to New York City, but hardly a day goes by without a DM or comment like the ones I shared in this video.

Honestly though, I’ve had so much fun making our little NYC apartment work for our family of five. Turning my kids shared room into the ultimate sleepover and bonding space has been one of my favorite projects. It’s definitely been a labor of love, and we’re still adding little touches as we go because homes don’t come together overnight.

If your kids share a room too, I hope you know there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. It’s so much more common than the internet makes it seem, and my kids genuinely love their little NYC bedroom.

Can’t wait to keep sharing more of our home and how we’re making this space work for our family🤍

... Read moreLiving in a New York City apartment with a family of five is often misunderstood, especially when it comes to space and comfort. From my own experience, turning a shared kids' room into a cozy sleepover and bonding area has been one of the most rewarding projects in our home. While many people assume that small apartments can't provide enough quality living space, this is simply not true. With thoughtful planning and a creative approach, even a 1,000 square foot space can be transformed to meet a family's needs. One common misconception I frequently encounter is the assumption that we opted for a triple bunk bed to accommodate our three kids. Due to our ceiling height limitations, that wasn't feasible. Instead, we chose a layout that works well and keeps safety a top priority. Ceilings under 9 feet can restrict certain furniture choices, but that challenge sparked creativity rather than compromise. Safety is also a top concern for many, especially regarding windows in apartment buildings. Thanks to New York City regulations requiring window guards, parents can feel more secure knowing the windows only open a few inches—too small even for a child's head to fit through. This legal measure has allowed our kids to enjoy natural light and fresh air without constant worry. Another frequent point of confusion is when people assume we live in a studio apartment due to the size. In reality, our family-friendly apartment includes three bedrooms, which is considered spacious by many NYC standards. Understanding that housing sizes and layouts vary greatly across cities can help reduce judgment based purely on square footage. Sharing a room for children, especially in urban environments, is far more common than online commentary suggests. Our kids genuinely love their shared space, and it has fostered closeness and creativity between them. For families considering this setup, adding personalized touches and multifunctional furniture can create a space that feels both inviting and practical. Making a small apartment work also means embracing the concept of downsizing and optimizing every inch of space. Rather than viewing limited space as a limitation, treating it as an opportunity to design intentionally has made living in NYC enjoyable rather than stressful. For those navigating similar challenges, I encourage embracing the journey of home transformation over time. It’s a labor of love, and each improvement reflects your family’s evolving needs. Sharing these experiences helps normalize diverse living situations and demonstrates that loving your home doesn’t hinge on square footage but on thoughtful design and family connection.
