Founders be like: “I’ll marry you after the war”

Building a company sometimes feels like a romance war meme.

[ TRANSMISSION LOST ]

Most founders promise the future before surviving the present.

“We’ll scale next year.”

“We’ll raise soon.”

“We’ll celebrate after the hard part.”

Reality is less cinematic.

Most of the journey is just surviving the battlefield long enough to earn that future.

Still building.

... Read moreFrom my experience working with startups, the phrase “I’ll marry you after the war” perfectly captures the precarious mindset many founders have. The 'war' here is the intense struggle of building a business—long hours, constant uncertainty, and frequent setbacks. Many founders instinctively make confident promises about future milestones such as scaling, fundraising, or celebrating achievements, but these are often aspirations rather than guarantees. I realized early on that the entrepreneur’s journey is less about cinematic victories and more about endurance. Surviving 'the battlefield' means dealing with cash flow constraints, market fluctuations, and the emotional toll that comes with wearing multiple hats. It’s easy to fall into the trap of projecting a future where everything magically works out, but the reality is that founders must focus on navigating day-to-day challenges. The warning “Dude… that’s literally a death flag” humorously points to how overpromising can backfire, leading to disappointment or loss of credibility if those future promises don’t materialize. Instead, a sustainable mindset involves acknowledging present difficulties while cautiously working towards future goals. The terms "TARGET LOCKED" and "[TRANSMISSION LOST]" from the meme reflect how quickly communication and plans can falter during this intense period. Founders often have to pivot and recalibrate their strategies to survive and stay on track. Personally, embracing this survival-first approach helped me build resilience. Celebrations and expansion opportunities became much more meaningful because they came after weathering unpredictable obstacles. For anyone embarking on a startup journey, remember that enduring the present storm is what eventually makes the promises of tomorrow possible.
