When my child first started receiving school-based occupational therapy, I, like many parents, thought it was primarily about improving handwriting skills. However, as I became more involved, I realized how much broader and impactful the role of a school OT really is. For example, occupational therapists help children with sensory processing challenges by providing strategies to manage their responses to the classroom environment—this could mean helping a child stay focused amid distractions or finding ways to calm their sensory overload. Additionally, OTs work on self-regulation techniques that allow students to control their emotions and behaviors, which is crucial for participation in group activities and learning. I've seen firsthand how interventions tailored to my child's unique sensory and motor needs helped him gain confidence and independence in daily classroom tasks like organizing materials, using tools, and even participating in recess. What stood out most was the collaborative approach: communication between the OT, teachers, and us as parents made a significant difference. It gave us a shared understanding of goals and strategies to support the child consistently. This teamwork also ensured that the therapy addressed real-life challenges faced throughout the school day, not just isolated skills. If I could share one insight with other families navigating school-based OT, it would be to see it as a comprehensive support system rather than a single-focus service. Embracing this perspective has enriched our experience and strengthened my child's ability to thrive in school.
