... Read moreFinding the right feeding approach for my 7-month-old has been a journey, and I’ve found that a mix of baby-led weaning (BLW) and purées works best for us. It allows for variety and ensures he gets all the nutrients he needs while exploring textures and flavors. For instance, incorporating things like mashed avocado is fantastic for healthy fats vital for brain development, and I often mix it with a bit of breastmilk or formula to get the right consistency for easy swallowing. When I first started introducing solids, I was a bit overwhelmed, but focusing on simple, single-ingredient foods made it much easier. Items like thinly sliced egg strips are wonderful for providing protein and iron, which are crucial for growing babies, and they’re easy for little hands to grasp. I just scramble an egg, cook it thinly like a pancake, and slice it into finger-sized pieces. Seeing him pick up an egg strip and bring it to his mouth all by himself is so rewarding and really encourages his independence! Fruits are always a hit in our household. Watermelon is a favorite, especially during teething stages, as it's hydrating and soothing. I always make sure to cut it into appropriate, bite-sized strips or offer a large, seedless wedge for him to safely gnaw on. And who can forget the classic banana? It's the ultimate grab-and-go snack, easy to mash into a purée or offer in chunks for BLW. For a quick and nutritious snack, I love to combine creamy yogurt with blueberries – just make sure the blueberries are halved or quartered for safety to prevent choking. For meals like dinner, I often go for something hearty and easy to digest. Black beans & hemp seeds are a powerhouse of plant-based protein and fiber, which helps with digestion. I usually mash them well and sometimes mix them into a baby-friendly stew or just serve them mashed with a little healthy fat like olive oil. Pair it with some fresh strawberry slices (again, cut appropriately) for a touch of natural sweetness and a boost of Vitamin C. One thing I’ve learned is not to stress too much about how much they eat each meal. It’s more about exposure and exploration at this age. Some days he's super hungry and clears his plate, other days he's more interested in playing with his food. And yes, it gets messy! Those crunchy sticks (like puffed corn or veggie sticks) are great for developing pincer grasp but prepare for crumbs and smeared food everywhere! Always remember to offer water with meals in an open cup or straw cup to help them learn to drink and to avoid constipation. And never leave your baby unattended during meal times, especially when they’re having solids. Every baby is different, so observe their cues and consult with your pediatrician about introducing new foods and any concerns you might have.
