Finding Out I’m Neurodivergent

Finding Out I’m Neurodivergent Was Bittersweet

I didn’t expect the relief and the grief to hit me at the same time.

When I found out I was neurodivergent, a lot of things started making sense.

The way I process things, the way I talk myself in circles, how loud the world feels sometimes—none of it was “just in my head.” It

wasn’t laziness.

It wasn’t me being “too sensitive.”

It was my brain doing what it’s always done… just differently than what’s considered “normal.”

And let me be honest: that realization hit like a wave.

Part of me was like, “Ohhh okay, that’s why I’ve always felt like the odd one out.”

Why I struggled with things other people seemed to breeze through.

Why I overthink everything and replay conversations in my head a million times.

Why I either talk too much or not at all

It gave me language for things I never knew how to explain.

But then came the other side of it.

The part nobody really prepares you for. The grief.

I started thinking about how many years I spent trying to be “normal.”

Trying to shrink myself.

Trying to “act right.” How many times I got labeled as dramatic, difficult, too emotional, too quiet, too intense.

How many times I told myself, “If I could just get it together like everyone else…”

And now, I realize—I was never broken. I was just misunderstood.

That hurts.

Even though there’s comfort in finally knowing, there’s also sadness in wondering who will actually get me—the real me, not the masked version I learned to show.

It’s hard not to feel alone sometimes, even now.

But here's what I’m learning:

I don’t have to explain myself to be valid.

I don’t have to force myself to fit spaces that were never built for me.

And I definitely don’t have to shrink for anyone's comfort.

I’m unlearning the shame.

I’m giving myself the grace I kept giving everybody else.

I’m slowly learning how to love the parts of me I used to hide.

This isn’t a pity blog .

This is a freedom blog.

To anyone reading this who just found out they’re neurodivergent—or even if you’ve always known but still feel the weight of being “different”—I see you.

You’re not too much.

You’re not lazy.

You’re not broken.

You’re just built different.

And now that you know that, you get to move differently too.

I’ll be talking more about this journey on Amber’s Narrative—because I know I’m not the only one navigating this bittersweet truth.

And don’t forget to catch the upcoming podcast episode, where I’ll be diving deeper into what this diagnosis has taught me and how

I’m learning to give myself grace out loud.

... Read moreUnderstanding neurodivergence involves recognizing that brains can process the world and experiences in ways that differ from societal norms. Many neurodivergent individuals share feelings of being misunderstood or out of step with the expectations placed on them, which can lead to years of trying to conform or 'act normal.' This struggle often results in a profound sense of grief for the lost time spent hiding one’s true self or battling internalized shame. The journey toward self-acceptance commonly includes unlearning harmful narratives such as laziness or oversensitivity, reframing these traits as part of the natural diversity of human neurobiology. Recognizing that neurodivergence is not a deficit but a different way of being helps foster self-compassion and reduces feelings of isolation. Important aspects of this process involve finding community and resources that validate these experiences and provide tools to navigate life while embracing neurodivergent traits. These might include coping strategies for sensory overload, communication challenges, or executive functioning differences. Additionally, the use of language plays a critical role. Having the vocabulary to describe one's experiences helps articulate feelings that were once confusing or invisible, empowering individuals to advocate for their needs and seek appropriate support. Despite the challenges, embracing neurodivergence opens pathways to freedom and authenticity. It encourages people to reject societal pressures to fit into spaces not designed for them and instead carve out environments and relationships that honor their unique strengths and perspectives. The recognition of these different cognitive processes is becoming more visible in broader cultural conversations and media, helping to dismantle stigma and promote inclusivity. For those newly diagnosed or exploring their neurodivergent identity, it is vital to know that validity does not depend on fitting traditional molds. There is no need to shrink oneself for others’ comfort. Instead, the goal is to give oneself grace, celebrate individuality, and connect with others who understand and support this path. As awareness grows, so too does the opportunity to reshape how society views and accommodates neurodiversity, fostering environments where all individuals can thrive without masking or shame. The phrase recognized in the OCR, "Research cleaned black holes start a new new business rearrange furniture," although seemingly unrelated, can metaphorically relate to how individuals may need to rearrange their perspectives, mental furniture, or routines when embracing neurodivergence—starting fresh with new understanding and strategies that support personal growth and well-being.
