My Overstimulation Struggles + What I Do To Cope

One thing I wish more people understood about overstimulation is how physical it can be. Not just “mental overwhelm.” When I’m overstimulated, my body is working overtime. My heart rate spikes, I can’t focus my eyes, my skin literally hurts to be touched.

For years, I’d power through social plans or busy environments and then wonder why I was crashing for days after. I blamed myself for being too sensitive. But what I really needed was to learn how my nervous system works and what helps it recover.

Now I know that sensory rest isn’t optional for me, it’s part of taking care of myself. And I’m not afraid to step away anymore. The more I respect my limits, the more capacity I actually have long-term.

... Read moreOverstimulation can manifest in various forms, affecting daily life significantly. It’s not merely a mental challenge; individuals may experience physical symptoms such as elevated heart rates, heightened sensitivity to touch, and difficulty focusing in busy environments. This understanding is crucial, particularly for those who identify as highly sensitive or neurodivergent. Sensory overload often occurs in social settings where multiple stimuli—like loud conversations and bright lights—converge. To effectively manage these experiences, it’s vital to incorporate sensory rest into your routine. Techniques can include opting for quieter environments, scheduling downtime post-events, and utilizing tools such as headphones to minimize overwhelming sensory input. Acknowledging personal limits is essential; respecting them not only aids recovery but also enhances long-term resilience. Creating a balanced schedule, which intentionally includes recovery time, can improve overall functionality. As awareness around these issues grows, many find solace in community support, sharing their experiences with others who understand the challenges of overstimulation. This shared understanding fosters a sense of belonging and provides valuable strategies for coping with sensory overload.
