Thought I was just tired...then I saw my ferritin

For years, I brushed off my exhaustion. I assumed I was just overbooked or not managing my schedule well enough. But nothing helped. I wasn’t lazy. I was depleted.

Getting lab work done changed everything. While my iron was technically normal, my ferritin had plummeted. And ferritin is your stored iron, aka what your body taps into when it needs energy.

Low ferritin can make you feel wiped out, foggy, short of breath...and it often flies under the radar.

I now supplement consistently and eat iron-rich foods paired with vitamin C (and spaced away from calcium). It’s made a slow but noticeable difference. If you're exhausted and don’t know why, ask to test your ferritin!! Not just your iron.

... Read moreIt's incredible how many of us walk around feeling constantly drained, assuming it's just 'life' or lack of sleep. I truly thought I was doing everything right, but nothing shifted until I looked deeper than my basic iron panel. My journey with low ferritin taught me so much, and if you're reading this, you might be experiencing some of these sneaky symptoms too! Beyond the constant tiredness and shortness of breath, low ferritin can manifest in ways you might not even connect. That persistent brain fog? It's not just feeling a bit fuzzy. For me, it felt like my thoughts were wading through treacle. I'd forget simple words mid-sentence, struggle to focus on tasks, and generally felt mentally sluggish, making everyday decisions feel monumental. It wasn't just physical exhaustion; my brain felt completely depleted. And then there are the less obvious low ferritin signs, especially those affecting your skin, hair, and nails. I started noticing my skin looked paler, almost translucent, and felt drier than usual, even with my usual skincare routine. My nails became brittle and chipped easily, and I was losing more hair than ever before in the shower. These weren't things I initially linked to my energy levels, but looking back, they were definitely part of the picture. Some people even experience restless legs syndrome, especially at night, which further disrupts sleep and exacerbates fatigue. The key takeaway from my experience? Don't settle for just a 'normal' iron test. Insist on checking your ferritin levels. Ferritin is your body's iron storage protein, and even if your active iron levels are okay, low reserves mean your body is constantly struggling to keep up. My doctor explained that while normal iron might mean you're not acutely anemic, a low ferritin can indicate a chronic, underlying iron deficiency that's silently stealing your vitality. Optimal ferritin levels are often much higher than what's considered merely 'normal' by some labs; many experts suggest aiming for at least 50-100 ng/mL for optimal well-being. Once I understood what was happening, the path to recovery felt clearer. Beyond eating iron-rich foods like lean red meat, dark leafy greens, and lentils, I learned the importance of pairing them with Vitamin C-rich foods (like bell peppers, oranges, or strawberries) to boost absorption. I also made sure to space my iron intake away from calcium-rich foods or drinks like milk and cheese, as calcium can inhibit iron absorption. When it came to supplements, I found that not all iron supplements are created equal. Some can cause digestive upset like constipation. I personally opted for a gentle form of iron, like ferrous bisglycinate, which is often better tolerated. Always take your iron supplement with Vitamin C for maximum absorption – I usually take mine with a glass of orange juice or a Vitamin C tablet. And remember, consistency is crucial. It took weeks, even months, to slowly rebuild my ferritin stores and start feeling a sustained difference. It's a marathon, not a sprint. If you're constantly battling unexplained exhaustion, listen to your body and advocate for yourself. Ask your doctor about a comprehensive iron panel that includes ferritin. It truly changed everything for me, and I hope sharing my journey helps you find your own path to renewed energy!
