Riley Sager - home before dark! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

2025/1/10 Edited to

... Read moreHey bookworms! So, I recently dove headfirst into Riley Sager's 'Home Before Dark,' and let me tell you, it was a wild ride! If you're into atmospheric, unsettling thrillers with a strong dose of mystery, then this book review is definitely for you. I’d seen it pop up on my feed a few times, and finally decided to give it a go – and I'm so glad I did! The premise itself is utterly captivating: a woman named Maggie Holt inherits the infamous Baneberry Hall, the very house her family fled twenty-five years ago after her father penned a bestselling non-fiction book claiming it was haunted. Maggie, however, doesn't believe in ghosts; she thinks her father's book was a fabrication. But when she returns to sell the property, strange things start to happen, forcing her to confront the past and the eerie tales within 'House of Horrors' – her father's book. What I loved most about 'Home Before Dark' was definitely the dual narrative. We get Maggie’s present-day experience in the house, trying to piece together the truth, intertwined with excerpts from her father's chilling book. This structure was genius! It created such a palpable sense of dread and constantly made me question what was real and what was embellished. Was Baneberry Hall genuinely haunted, or was there a more sinister, human explanation? Sager masterfully keeps you guessing until the very end. The atmosphere he builds is just incredible – I felt like I was right there with Maggie, jumping at every creak and shadow. For me, the suspense was top-notch. Every chapter left me desperately wanting to know more, and I found myself staying up way past my bedtime, just needing to read 'one more page.' The characters, especially Maggie, felt real and relatable. Her skepticism battling against undeniable occurrences made her journey so compelling. I also appreciated how the author handled the 'haunted house' trope, giving it a fresh and modern twist without relying on cheap scares. It's more psychological, which I personally adore. So, why four stars instead of a perfect five? Honestly, there were just a couple of moments where the pacing felt ever-so-slightly off, or a minor plot point stretched my suspension of disbelief a tiny bit. But these are truly minor quibbles in an otherwise fantastic read. This is a solid, gripping thriller that delivers on its promise of chills and thrills. If you're a fan of authors like Simone St. James or Shari Lapena, or if you just love a good old-fashioned spooky house story with a modern psychological edge, then you absolutely need to add 'Home Before Dark' to your TBR pile. It’s perfect for a rainy weekend read, especially if you enjoy trying to solve the mystery alongside the protagonist. Trust me, you won't be bored!
