The journey of becoming a mother is often pictured as immediate and seamless — holding your newborn right after delivery, feeling an instant bond. However, in cases like mine, when complications such as HELLP syndrome arise, the experience can be vastly different but deeply meaningful in its own right. HELLP syndrome is a severe form of preeclampsia that can threaten both the mother and baby's health, often leading to early delivery and an extended stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For me, it meant I was unable to hold my baby for the first five days after birth, a period filled with anxious waiting and hope. During those days, I learned the importance of small moments — watching my baby's tiny movements through the NICU glass, hearing the steady beep of the machines supporting him, and dreaming about the day I could finally hold him. When that day came, it was nothing short of miraculous. Holding my baby in my arms for the first time was not just about physical contact; it was a profound connection and a celebration of strength for both of us. For mothers experiencing similar NICU journeys with preemie babies, I encourage you to cherish every effort you make to bond, whether through skin-to-skin contact, talking or singing to your baby, or simply being present. These moments, though sometimes delayed or different from what we expect, build resilience and love that lasts a lifetime.
