What am I doing wrong??
I used to crochet on occasion when I was like 13. Now I am almost 20 and figured I could jump back into it and crochet a small baby blanket or something simple. I only (vaugely) remember chains, single and double crochet and thought I could work with it. Here are the problems I’m running into on my test pieces.
1- the yarn keeps slipping off the hook as I’m running it through the loops and getting caught. Starting to unravel the individual pieces and it’s so annoying. Should I be using a bigger hook?? I wanted to use slightly fluffier yarn since it is meant to be a blanket.
2- I remember to start a new row you have to chain 2 and turn your work. I think I’m doing it correctly but every time I try it messes up my placement and I don’t know where to go back in. Is there something I can do to help/prevent this or am I doing it wrong?
3- I feel like I am doing the stitches way too tight because its hard to get back through the loops I already did, but if I do them any looser they will fall right off my hook. Does this come back to the “just get a bigger hook” solution? (I am currently using a 5.00 mm)
Im aware the pictures probably won’t be very helpful so I’ll do my best to answer any specific questions. Literally ANY advice would be helpful but keep in mind these are my first test pieces I’ve done in 7+ years lol. Thanks guys.

1: it most likely is a handling problem. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just something you have to work with and get used to. 2: for the chains it depends on the stitches. For a single crochet, one chain. For double, two or three. Then do not skip the stitch next to the chains you just did.
