Fall semester has started!..and I’m worried I’m doing it all wrong…
So I’m a sophomore this year, I originally planned to stay in the dorms one more year, but Housing messed that up for me (thanks, guys) so I had to get an off campus apartment. Due to this, I have to commute to classes and events if I want to be part of them. now, while that doesn’t sound too bad, and I thoroughly enjoy my space, I feel completely isolated. Granted, classes *just* started last week, this is the first full week. I am joining and organizing groups, I am making a conscious effort to see people and do things, but between having to work as much as possible and being a full time student, I do feel lonely. I’m really hoping with my student organization this feeling goes away and I’m able to build a community, but right now I do feel alone. I won’t give up, but it is a little disheartening.
is there anything else I can do? Any advice in this situation is greatly appreciated!
... Read moreThe transition to college can be both exciting and daunting, especially in your sophomore year. As you navigate the challenges of living off-campus and managing a busy schedule, it's common to feel lonely or disconnected. One effective way to cope with these feelings is to actively seek out campus events and workshops that interest you. Many universities offer resources for students to meet others, such as involvement fairs and social gatherings.
Joining clubs relevant to your major or hobbies can foster friendships and create a sense of belonging. Remember, you're not alone; many other students share similar feelings of isolation, especially at the beginning of the semester. Use social media platforms and campus bulletin boards to stay informed about activities and groups.
Additionally, consider forming study groups with classmates; this not only aids academic success but also enhances your social network. If commuting is a challenge, try scheduling specific days to dedicate to your studies on campus, allowing for more interaction with peers.
Lastly, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Many colleges offer counseling services and peer support groups to help students cope with mental health challenges and feelings of isolation. Building a community takes time and effort, but with perseverance and the right strategies, you can transform your college experience into a fulfilling journey.
ugh making friends is hard :(( I just recently made a post with a ton of college tips to meet people but some of my top ones I reccomend are to go to student events, join clubs, and try to connect with peers online!
Find someone in class to sit next to and make conversation with! Sometimes it’s hard to be the one to start a conversation but it’ll make all the difference when you have at least one familiar face in class!
