... Read moreParkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects movement. Characterized by symptoms such as shaking, stiffness, and balance difficulties, PD presents significant challenges for patients and caregivers alike. The disease progresses over time, often starting subtly with mild tremors and evolving as dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra deteriorate. Research indicates that by the time motor symptoms become apparent, a significant loss of dopaminergic neurons has already occurred—approximately 60% to 80%. Early detection and management can help mitigate symptoms and enhance quality of life. Various factors contribute to the etiology of PD, including genetic predispositions and environmental toxins such as pesticides and heavy metals. Current pharmacological treatments primarily focus on restoring dopamine levels in the brain. Levodopa, often administered in combination with carbidopa, serves as a cornerstone therapy for many patients. Additional options include dopamine agonists like pramipexole and rotigotine, which can help alleviate symptoms and reduce the required dosage of levodopa. Ongoing research aims to better understand the pathology of Parkinson's Disease and develop new therapeutic strategies. Non-motor symptoms, such as sleep disturbances and mood disorders, also significantly impact patients' well-being and warrant comprehensive management. As we learn more about PD, enhancing awareness through education continues to be vital, allowing individuals affected to make informed decisions about their health and treatment options.
