What I made with my sourdough starter this week
If you're anything like me, you probably started your sourdough journey with the dream of baking perfect, crusty artisan loaves. But after a while, you might find yourself with a super active starter and wonder, 'what else can I make with this bubbly friend besides just bread?' Well, I'm here to tell you, the possibilities are absolutely endless, and it's so much fun to experiment! I recently dove headfirst into using my sourdough starter for more than just a plain loaf, and the results have been incredible. For starters, sweet treats get a whole new dimension. I tried my hand at Browned butter Chocolate chip cookies, and let me tell you, the subtle tang from the sourdough perfectly balances the sweetness, creating an unbelievably chewy and flavorful cookie. It's a game-changer! And don't even get me started on Cinnamon Rolls. The sourdough makes them incredibly soft and tender, with a slight depth of flavor that a regular yeast roll just can't achieve. I've also been having fun with variations like Browned Butter, White Chocolate, Berry, Oatmeal Cookie, which adds a delightful fruity twist. But it's not all about the sweets! Sourdough starter truly shines in savory bakes too. If you're looking to elevate your lunch or dinner, try making a savory loaf like my recent favorite: a Bacon, Cheddar, JalapeƱo, Cream Cheese loaf. The combination of spicy jalapeƱo, creamy cheese, and salty bacon is just divine, and the sourdough gives it an amazing texture and a slightly tangy crust. I also experimented with a Bacon, Cheddar, Green Onion, Cream Cheese loaf, which was equally delicious. Another fantastic savory option is Garlic, Chive, Cheddar Biscuits ā flaky, cheesy, and packed with flavor, they are perfect with soup or as a snack. And for something truly gourmet, a Carmelized Onion & Hickory Cheese loaf is a must-try. The richness of the caramelized onions with the smoky cheese is just heavenly. And let's not forget other everyday staples! Making your own sourdough Bagels is incredibly rewarding. The chewiness and flavor are far superior to store-bought. Many of these recipes are not only delicious but also a brilliant way to use up your discard or simply incorporate the unique benefits of sourdough into your diet, offering better digestibility and a more complex flavor profile. Don't be intimidated by trying new things; many of these 'beyond bread' recipes are surprisingly easy and a fantastic way to keep your sourdough journey exciting and your kitchen smelling amazing!
