Before and After Color✨

After seeing how much life those multicolored pencils brought to my eye drawings on a regular sketchbook page, I've been so excited to share another technique I've been exploring: drawing on black paper! It's a completely different experience from working on white, and the results can be incredibly striking. I've seen so many artists create stunning pieces where colors just glow against a black background. It really makes you rethink your entire coloring process! When you're used to building up shadows, switching to building up light on black paper is a fun challenge. The 'before and after' effect can be even more dramatic because the black instantly provides that deep contrast. Getting started, I quickly learned that not all black papers are created equal. A good quality, heavy black paper with a bit of tooth really helps the colored pencils grip, allowing those vibrant hues to layer beautifully. Some artists even prefer a smoother surface for blending, so it definitely depends on your personal style and what you're trying to achieve with your abstract, eye-like shapes. My existing multicolored pencils work, but I've found that certain brands have specific 'lightfast' or more opaque colors that truly shine on dark surfaces. Wax-based pencils often appear more opaque than oil-based ones, which is something I always keep in mind. For those uncolored pencil drawings, placing a very light base layer (sometimes even white or a pale grey) first can make a huge difference. This initial layer helps your vibrant blues, purples, oranges, and pinks really pop when you layer them on top. It’s all about patience and light pressure. You can't just press hard immediately; gradually building up layers helps achieve that intense, rich color. I try to make sure each stroke contributes to the overall vibrancy. And don't forget the highlights! Using a sharp white or very light-colored pencil for those tiny reflective spots, much like in an eye drawing, can really bring the art to life. It’s almost like magic watching them appear against the dark background. Blending can be done with colorless blenders or by layering complementary colors lightly. I've even experimented with solvent-based blenders, but you have to be careful not to oversaturate the paper.
