My final work is almost here!

Many of you have been curious about the unglazed ceramic texture I’m exploring for my final projects, and I’m so excited to dive deeper into it! When I first started my journey as a ceramic student, I quickly fell in love with the raw, authentic feel of unglazed pieces. There's something incredibly special about the natural surface of the clay, before any glaze is applied. Unglazed ceramic refers to pottery that hasn't been coated with a glassy finish after its final firing. What you see and feel is the true, bisque-fired body of the clay. This can range from incredibly smooth, almost polished surfaces to more rustic, gritty textures, depending on the type of clay used and how it's treated. Looking at the close-up of my white ceramic mug, you can really appreciate that unique, textured finish that a glaze would otherwise hide. For my college pottery final projects, I deliberately chose to highlight these unglazed finishes on several pieces, like the mugs and bowls you might have seen around the pottery studio table. I wanted to emphasize the tactile experience and the organic beauty of the clay itself. The way light interacts with an unglazed surface is different—it absorbs and diffuses light in a soft, inviting manner, rather than reflecting it. This choice felt right for showcasing the pure effort and form of my student work. Working with unglazed ceramics also presents its own set of challenges and rewards. Every tiny mark or imperfection from the throwing or hand-building process is visible, so meticulous surface preparation is key. Sometimes, I spend hours just gently sanding or sponging the bisque ware to achieve that perfect, uniform unglazed ceramic texture before the final firing. It's a delicate dance! You also have to consider the clay body itself; some clays are naturally more porous, which affects the final feel and potential use of the piece. I've even experimented with subtle underglaze paints on some pieces to add color while still maintaining that beautiful raw texture. If you're creating or collecting unglazed pottery, it's good to know how to care for it. Since it's more porous than glazed ware, I often recommend a food-safe sealant for any functional pieces that will hold liquids. For decorative items, a simple dusting or a gentle wipe with a damp cloth is usually enough. It’s all part of embracing the unique charm of unglazed ceramic.
