Caught Something Imaging The Horsehead Nebula…

Using my SeeStar S50 Telescope, doing 30 second exposures. The first image is at 46 minutes, then I noticed a cool Capture at 54 minutes. This was taken on the morning of 10/18/25.

Maybe a Meteor or Satellite...

Dare we say UFO? We can neither confirm nor deny... #Astronomy #astrophotography #stars #nebula #universe

2025/10/18 Edited to

... Read moreAs an avid astrophotographer, there's nothing quite like the thrill of pointing your telescope towards the cosmos and seeing what surprises the universe has in store. When I first started imaging the Horsehead Nebula with my SeeStar S50, I was primarily focused on capturing the iconic dark cloud in all its glory. But sometimes, the unexpected happens, and that's often where the real magic (and mystery!) begins. The Horsehead Nebula, or Barnard 33, is a truly breathtaking target. It's a dark nebula in the constellation Orion, easily recognized by its distinct horse's head shape silhouetted against the bright emission nebula IC 434. It's notoriously challenging to image due to its dimness, but with instruments like the SeeStar S50, it's becoming more accessible to amateur astronomers like myself. I usually find that using 30-second exposures, like I did for this capture, helps to gather enough light from this elusive target without overexposing the brighter stars. Combining many of these exposures later in stacking software really brings out the subtle details. Speaking of bright nebulae, the M42, or Orion Nebula, is often a gateway target for many of us, and for good reason! It’s one of the brightest and most beautiful nebulae in the night sky, easily visible even with the naked eye under dark conditions. Located just below Orion’s Belt, it’s a stellar nursery, a place where new stars are being born. If you're using a SeeStar S50, M42 is an excellent target to practice your settings and focusing. I've found that even shorter exposures can yield stunning results, and it's a fantastic way to get comfortable with your equipment before moving on to more challenging subjects like the Horsehead. Capturing M42 with its vibrant colors and intricate details is incredibly rewarding and helps build the skills needed for fainter objects. Now, about those unexpected streaks in astrophotography. It’s actually quite common to catch things like satellites, meteors, or even airplanes in your long exposures. When I saw that streak during my Horsehead Nebula session, my first thought was, 'What was that?!' It’s part of the fun and challenge of shooting the night sky. Usually, satellites appear as straight, consistent lines moving across the frame. Meteors, on the other hand, can be quicker, sometimes brighter at one end, and might even show a slight curve. Airplanes are usually identifiable by their blinking lights, which appear as a series of dots rather than a continuous line. While stacking software can often help to remove these unwanted trails by averaging out the noise, sometimes, like in my case, a single frame captures something truly intriguing. It’s moments like these that remind me just how dynamic and full of surprises the universe truly is. Keep shooting, and you never know what you might discover!
