... Read moreGetting braces was a big adjustment for me, especially when it came to my favorite snacks! It felt like suddenly everything I loved was off-limits. But don't worry, I quickly learned that while some sacrifices are necessary, there are still plenty of delicious treats you can enjoy without risking a broken bracket or a cavity.
Beyond the obvious 'soft foods' like yogurt and mashed potatoes, I've found some real winners. Think soft cookies, smooth chocolate bars (nothing with nuts or caramel!), and even some types of ice cream. Puddings, smoothies, and soft cheeses are also lifesavers when your teeth are feeling sensitive.
My original post touched on specific candies like Nerds (a definite no-go for me – those hard, tiny pieces are a disaster for brackets, rated 0/10!) and Skittles (super sticky, also a no-no, rated 0/10!). But what about other popular picks? For instance, many ask, 'Can you eat Hot Cheetos with braces?' While they're not hard like nuts, they can get lodged in your braces and are quite acidic, which isn't great for your enamel over time. I'd lean towards avoiding them or eating them very carefully and brushing immediately after. As for Haribo gummies or Welch's Fruit Snacks, these are usually way too chewy and sticky. They get stuck everywhere and can pull at wires or brackets, so I generally steered clear. On the brighter side, I found that small, soft chocolates like Kit Kat Minis and Reese's Miniature Cups were often okay, as long as I bit carefully and didn't chew them in a way that put direct pressure on a bracket. They melt pretty easily, which helps, earning them a 7/10 rating in my book.
During the first week with braces, your teeth will likely be quite sore. This is definitely not the time for anything crunchy or hard. Stick to a liquid or very soft diet: soups, broths, yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and soft pasta. Think of it as a 'braces bootcamp' for your mouth! Gradually introduce softer solid foods as the soreness subsides.
Beyond the obvious hard candies and chewing gum, there's a wider list of foods to absolutely avoid to protect your investment in a perfect smile. This includes:
Hard, crunchy foods: Popcorn (the kernels are notorious!), nuts, hard pretzels, hard bread crusts, and chewing on ice cubes.
Sticky or chewy foods: Caramel, taffy, licorice, chewy granola bars, bagels, and even tough meat like steak (unless cut into very small pieces).
Foods you bite into: Whole apples (cut them into wedges!), corn on the cob (cut it off the cob!), and raw carrots (shred or steam them).
Sugary drinks: While not directly damaging to braces, frequent consumption can lead to cavities, which are even harder to deal with when you have braces.
Even with 'safe' foods, it's about how you eat them. Take small bites, chew slowly, and use your back teeth as much as possible. Cutting food into smaller pieces is a game-changer. And, seriously, carry a travel toothbrush and floss picks with you everywhere! Food will get stuck, and cleaning it out promptly prevents discomfort and keeps your teeth healthy. Ultimately, good oral hygiene is your best friend when you have braces. Brush after every meal, use interdental brushes or floss threaders daily, and don't skip your regular dental check-ups. A little extra effort now means a beautiful, healthy smile later!
