Can you eat these with braces?
Eating too much candy can cause cavities and especially with braces because of the brackets.
Getting braces is a big step towards a perfect smile, but let's be real – one of the first things many of us wonder is, "Can YOU eat these candies with braces on?" The short answer is: some, but with caution! That yearning for a sugary treat doesn't just disappear, but protecting your orthodontia is crucial. From my own experience, avoiding certain types of candy is key to preventing broken brackets, bent wires, and emergency trips to the orthodontist. Sticky, chewy, and hard candies are the biggest culprits. Think about it: a gummy bear or a piece of caramel can easily get stuck in your braces, pulling a bracket right off or bending a wire. Hard candies like lollipops, jawbreakers, or even some types of Nerds can also cause damage if you bite down on them incorrectly. It’s not just about the sugar, which already increases cavity risk, but the physical force and stickiness against your dental work. So, what about those specific candies everyone asks about? Can you eat gummies with braces? Unfortunately, most gummies, including popular ones like Haribo, gummy bears, Airheads, and even Skittles, are usually a no-go. Their chewy texture is notorious for getting lodged in braces and can even pull off brackets. Is it ok to eat gummies with braces? My orthodontist always said no, and I quickly learned why after a close call! What sweets can you eat with braces then? Don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom! There are still plenty of delicious options. Soft, melt-in-your-mouth chocolates are often a safe bet. Think plain chocolate bars, chocolate melts, or even soft chocolate truffles. Just be sure they don't have hard nuts or caramel centers. Ice cream, frozen yogurt, and smoothies are also fantastic braces-friendly treats that can even soothe sore teeth after an adjustment. Soft cookies or brownies without nuts or hard pieces are usually okay too. If you're craving something with a bit more chew, some soft caramels can be enjoyed if you cut them into tiny pieces and let them melt in your mouth rather than chewing vigorously. Just remember to be gentle! When you do indulge, remember these tips: cut your candy into small, manageable pieces. This reduces the stress on your braces. Always brush your teeth thoroughly right after eating candy, or at least rinse your mouth vigorously with water if brushing isn't immediately possible. This helps wash away sugar and food particles that can get trapped around your brackets and wires. Choosing "peelable" or easily dissolvable options can sometimes be a safer bet, but always prioritize softness. Ultimately, the best advice comes from your orthodontist, but a little self-awareness and choosing wisely can help you enjoy treats without compromising your smile journey. Protecting that investment in your teeth is worth a little candy sacrifice, trust me!
