As a dental hygienist, I've seen firsthand how challenging it can be for parents to confirm if their kids are truly brushing their teeth properly. One subtle way to tell if kids have brushed is by checking for that fresh, minty scent on their breath or the clean feeling of their teeth and gums. Usually, simply asking doesn’t work as kids might say they brushed even if they didn’t. Another trick I often suggest is observing the condition of their toothbrush. If it’s damp and has toothpaste residue, that’s a good sign they used it recently. Also, look for consistent toothpaste spots or small toothpaste drips around the sink, which can be a giveaway. You can also make brushing a shared activity. Brushing together makes it fun and sets a good example. My experience is that kids are more motivated when they feel involved or see parents brushing their teeth at the same time. Plus, watching their technique allows you to guide and correct if needed. In my practice, I encourage parents to keep the toothbrushing routine consistent by setting a specific time every day, like after breakfast and right before bed. Creating a reward chart with stickers for each day they brush can keep kids excited and accountable without pressure. If you’re concerned about whether your kids are brushing thoroughly, especially in hard-to-reach areas, consider using disclosing tablets occasionally. These tablets reveal plaque by coloring unbrushed spots, which can also help kids learn where to focus their brushing. Ultimately, it’s about building habits early and making oral hygiene a positive part of your child’s daily routine. When kids understand why brushing is important and feel supported rather than policed, they’re more likely to maintain good oral health on their own.
