Easy & Fun Salt Dough Play! ✨

Today, we made salt dough, and it was a hit! I mixed:

🥣 2 cups flour

🧂 1 cup salt

💧 1 cup cold water

After kneading it into a soft dough, I gave my toddler a portion to play with—plus a cookie cutter to press out fun shapes! He had so much fun squishing, rolling, and cutting. The best part? I saved the extra dough in a ziplock bag so we can pull it out for more activities throughout the week!

Such an easy, mess-free sensory activity that keeps little hands busy! Have you ever tried salt dough? What would you make with it?

... Read moreSo many of you asked for more details after my quick salt dough post! I totally get it – making this homemade salt dough is truly a game-changer for easy toddler activities. You might be wondering about the best way to mix it, or if there are any secrets to getting that perfect consistency with just flour, salt, and water. Well, after many batches (and a few sticky mishaps!), I’ve got some extra tips to share that will make your salt dough experience even better. First, let's nail down those essential salt dough ingredients: I always start with 2 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of fine salt, and 1 cup of cold water. When you're ready to start mixing salt dough in a bowl, here's my step-by-step approach. First, combine the flour and salt thoroughly in a large mixing bowl. I use a whisk to make sure they're really well integrated. Then, gradually add the cold water, stirring it in with a spoon or your hands until a shaggy dough forms. Once it starts coming together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and get kneading! This is where the magic happens. Knead for about 5-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky. If it feels too wet, add a tiny bit more flour. If it's too dry and crumbly, a few drops of water will do the trick. The goal is a consistency that's pliable and easy for little hands to manage. Many people search for homemade playdough ingredients like flour, salt, and water, and salt dough is a fantastic, non-toxic alternative. Unlike playdough recipes that might call for cream of tartar to achieve a super soft, long-lasting texture, salt dough is ideal if you’re looking for something that can air-dry or be baked to create permanent keepsakes. It's incredibly inexpensive to make, using pantry staples you likely already have. My little one loves working with it just as much as traditional playdough! Once your salt dough is ready, the fun truly begins! We love using classic cookie cutters, just like the star-shaped one in my photo, to press out various shapes. But don't stop there! Try rolling the dough flat with a small rolling pin, then using blunt knives or plastic dough tools for cutting practice. You can make handprints, sculpt simple figures, or even press leaves and textured objects into the dough to create imprints. For extra sparkle, you can knead in some glitter, or once the shapes are dry, they're perfect for painting and decorating. This truly is an easy toddler activity that can fill an afternoon with creative exploration. And for those wondering how to save for later, just like I mentioned, storing your extra dough is simple. Pop it into an airtight container or a Ziploc bag and keep it in the refrigerator. I've found it stays fresh and pliable for about a week or two. If it feels a little stiff when you take it out, a quick knead with a few drops of water usually brings it right back to life. Trust me, this simple mix of flour, salt, and water will become a staple in your sensory play arsenal!
