IFA training continued
“When the trainee has achieved a mastery of a sufficient number of poems in each Odù, he proceeds to a systematic learning of their interpretations. He also learns the sacrifices associated with each poem.15 This stage is very crucial to his education because without the traditional interpretations of each poem and their corresponding sacrifices, no Ifá priest can communicate meaningfully with his client. In fact, the client is more interested in the interpretation of each poem than in mere chanting. He is also keenly interested in the sacrifices that will be prescribed for him so that he may have the full confidence that the divinities and the ancestors are in support of whatever he plans to do.”

The training of an Ifá priest is a profound journey that encompasses learning traditional poems and their interpretations. These poems, integral to the Ifá divination system, provide insights into spiritual matters and life decisions. Mastery of these texts is essential, as each poem often requires specific sacrifices that vary based on the guidance sought. Students are taught not just to recite these poems but to understand their deeper meanings, thereby enhancing their ability to provide meaningful consultations for their clients. Furthermore, the interconnected nature of the Ifá system emphasizes the relationship between the spiritual and material realms. Clients look for more than just recitations; they seek a connection and assurance that their divination is backed by sacred traditions. Understanding the significance of each sacrifice plays a critical role in reinforcing this trust. It is through this rigorous training that Ifá priests cultivate their capabilities to navigate complex spiritual landscapes, ensuring that they are well-equipped to address the diverse needs of individuals seeking guidance from the divine.
