Stop 16 — Crowsnest Pass, Alberta ⛰️

(I'm counting down 25 towns until the final stop on New Year's Eve)

Crowsnest Pass surprised me.

I went in expecting mountains and mining history…

but what I found was a place shaped by resilience.

Underground tunnels frozen in time.

A mountainside that once wiped out a town.

Forest fire scars where new life is already pushing through.

Families who stayed — and rebuilt — after tragedy after tragedy.

This valley isn’t just scenic.

It remembers… and it endures.

I’d driven through Crowsnest Pass countless times before.

This time, I finally slowed down — and it changed the way I see this place.

Stay tuned for a glimpse into my journey exploring the beauty, the history, and the strength of Crowsnest Pass.

Crowsnest Pass

... Read moreCrowsnest Pass in Alberta is much more than just a picturesque mountain valley; it’s a living testament to human endurance and natural recovery. Known historically for its coal mining roots, this region harbors underground tunnels that remain frozen in time, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past working lives of the mining communities. Beyond its industrial history, the area has faced significant natural and man-made hardships, including a devastating mountainside avalanche that once wiped out part of a town and large forest fires that left scars on the landscape. Remarkably, these events have not defined the valley, but instead highlighted the resilient spirit of its inhabitants. Families who chose to stay, rebuild, and nurture the land after such tragedies have woven a narrative of strength and renewal that continues to this day. Today, the aftermath of forest fires reveals nature’s potent comeback, with new vegetation pushing through charred earth, symbolizing hope and resilience. For travelers and explorers, slowing down in Crowsnest Pass invites a deeper appreciation of this complex and moving story that intertwines harsh realities with breathtaking scenery. In addition, Crowsnest Pass serves as a gateway to the Southern Alberta Rockies, offering outdoor enthusiasts hiking, climbing, and panoramic views amid rugged mountain ranges. Whether you are intrigued by historical sites, drawn to nature’s recovery, or seeking adventure in the Rockies, Crowsnest Pass presents a multifaceted destination that resonates with authentic stories and natural beauty. This unique blend of history, community resilience, and natural grandeur makes Crowsnest Pass a must-visit location for those exploring Alberta. Keep an eye out for upcoming detailed explorations that delve deeper into this remarkable region’s heritage and landscapes.
