Stop 25 - Bassano, Alberta
I set out to visit 25 Alberta towns this year. With New Year’s Eve just ahead, I’m counting them down — one town per day — until we reach the final stop on December 31st.
Bassano was our very first town: BBQ smoke in the air and tons of delicious food at the Small Town Smoke Down, a really sweet car show, plus a tour through the massive Bassano Dam — the irrigation powerhouse that turned this prairie into prime farmland.

A must-see landmark is the Bassano Dam, an impressive feat of engineering that has played a vital role in supporting local agriculture by turning the surrounding prairie into productive farmland. Learning about how this dam irrigates the region gave me a greater appreciation for the community’s resilience and innovation. Exploring Bassano's cozy streets, you get a sense of authentic small-town Alberta life, with friendly residents and a spirit of celebration. Whether you’re into culinary delights, history, or simply enjoying scenic rural landscapes, Bassano offers a memorable experience that reflects the unique charm of Alberta’s towns.
