Stettler- The Heart of Alberta

On Valentine's Day it's fitting to feature the town that's known as "The Heart of Alberta". Stettler is situated in the middle of the province at the junction point of highways 12 and 56 so geographically it fits... but after visiting I'd have to say the town lives up to the name too. Such great people with a lot of heart. But if I'm being honest, it's not one town that I'd say is the heart. It's all of these small rural communities that make the heart of the province. The volunteers who give without desire for recognition. The neighbours who would lend a hand at the first chance. It's the culture I've seen in every one of these communities and it's awe inspiring. It's a great reminder on how we should all be thinking no matter where we live and remember we can witness the heart of Alberta in a small town but it doesn't have to stay there, we can bring it home and spread it. And if you haven't watched the long-form episode on Stettler... check it out on the Backroads Alberta Youtube Channel.

... Read moreVisiting Stettler truly gives you a sense of what community means in Alberta. The town’s geographical position at the junction of highways 12 and 56 not only makes it a central hub but also a symbol of connection within the province. What stood out most to me was the genuine warmth and kindness of its people—locals who embody the spirit of Alberta’s rural heart. In many small towns like Stettler, volunteers play an indispensable role, often quietly supporting community events, local services, and initiatives without seeking recognition. During my visit, I saw firsthand how these unsung heroes keep the town vibrant and welcoming. It’s inspiring to witness neighbors who are always willing to lend a hand, whether it’s helping with a community garden, organizing town gatherings, or simply offering support during tough times. This culture of generosity and mutual aid isn’t just unique to Stettler—it’s common across many rural communities in Alberta. That collective spirit truly makes these towns the heart of the province, beyond just one geographic point. It reminds me that no matter where we live, we can carry that spirit with us and help build stronger, more caring communities. If you want to dive deeper into what makes Stettler special, the Backroads Alberta YouTube channel has a wonderful long-form episode that captures the town’s essence and stories from its residents. It’s a beautiful tribute to small-town life and the values that keep these places thriving. Whether you’re planning a visit or simply curious about Alberta’s rural communities, Stettler’s story shows how connection, kindness, and community spirit truly define 'The Heart of Alberta.'

Small town game
Let's play a game. Pick a small town. Any small town. They are the backbone of the province. It's the farms and the hard-working people there that keep the rest of us going and put food on our tables. And it's these same people that are out there volunteering and helping one another out

Documentary on the Heart of Alberta
Hey Alberta. I need $1 from you. Not joking. I traveled about 10,000 miles and filmed 25 of our small towns in 2025. From Cardston to Wainwright to Grimshaw, I’ve seen the soul of this province. And here’s the hard truth: Rural Alberta is being ignored. #ruralalberta #kickstarter #s
