Things I switched to live a lower toxin lifestyle

Tinctures - if you would have told me 5 years ago that today I would be reaching for tinctures instead of Tylenol, allergy medicine or cough syrup when sick, I’d ask what a tincture was. LOL. In all seriousness, Earthley Wellness has some of my favorites. They are fast acting, taste good and super affordable.

Mayo - regular mayos are full of seed oil and filler ingredients and the clean mayos are so dang expensive! I make homemade with just an egg, avocado oil, salt and vinegar! So easy and affordable.

Dishwasher Detergent - Blueland is the only clean dishwasher detergent I found that cleaned my dishes. All of the other ones I tried left a nasty residue on my dishes or didn’t clean them well. I even have hard water so that should tell you something about Blueland!

Cleaners/Disinfectants - I started making my own recently and find that they work! I was skeptical at first because I wanted to be able to disinfect my bathroom but I found that putting antibacterial and antifungal essential oils (eucalyptus, peppermint and/or tea tree oil) in your cleaner works as a disinfectant. Ditch the harsh chemical cleaners that are terrible for your lungs and endocrine disruptors. The homemade ones work just as well.

Laundry Detergent - I recently started using Molly’s Suds plus washing soda as a booster and found that it works great. I have been searching for a clean unscented detergent for awhile and found my favorite. It even works on my husband’s greased up work clothes.

Essential Oils - About a year ago, I ditched all the candles from my house. Fragranced candles are another HUGE endocrine disruptor. I swapped the candles for a cheap oil diffuser and slowly started my collection of essential oils. One of my favs is Plant Therapy. I also love this because you can customize your scents for holidays, seasons, etc.

Deodorant - get rid of your deodorant that contains aluminum. Aluminum is a neurotoxin and has been linked to Alzheimer’s and dementia. I use Salt & Stone and love their scent Santal & Vetiver.

Tallow: Hear me out: you can do so much with tallow. It is cheap and you can customize it. I have made moisturizers with it for face and body. I added frankincense essential oils to my face moisturizer since it’s good for the skin. My face has never been clearer even being postpartum!!! I would like to make candles in the future with the tallow I have in the freezer. So many face creams and lotions out there have hormone disrupting chemicals in them. If you aren’t into making your own, Lady May Tallow has a vanilla scented tallow lotion that smells like cupcakes. It is the best!

I feel like a broken record here about the endocrine disruptors but you catch my drift. I do want to add that many of these things I purchased after I used up what I already had. You don’t need to throw things away if you already bought them. You don’t know what you don’t know.

Some of my next swaps will be:

Stainless steel cookware - I haven’t made the purchase yet just because we spent so much money on the non stick set I have now before we found out the dangers of non stick 😫

Cloth diapers - I am a first time mom of an almost 4 month old and the amount of diapers (and money spent on diapers) we went through in the newborn phase and still go through actually is insane. I would love to do cloth diapers with my next baby. A couple years ago I thought that was one of the most disgusting things but I did my research and it changed my mind 🤷🏻‍♀️

Water Filter - I know we have hard water and can only imagine what terrible chemicals are in our water (probably chlorine) so I would love to purchase a water filter for our house so our shower/bath water is less harsh on our skin and the water we wash our dishes and brush our teeth with will be a little better than what it is now.

... Read moreEmbracing a lower toxin lifestyle involves carefully selecting products that minimize exposure to harmful chemicals and endocrine disruptors commonly found in everyday household items. Tinctures have gained popularity as natural remedies, offering fast-acting and flavorful alternatives to conventional medications like Tylenol or allergy medicine. Earthley Wellness tinctures, noted for their certified organic ingredients, are particularly favored due to their affordability and effectiveness. When it comes to food, making homemade mayonnaise using simple ingredients such as eggs, avocado oil, salt, and vinegar avoids the seed oils and fillers present in many commercial mayos, which are often linked to health concerns. This not only ensures a cleaner ingredient list but is also budget-friendly. Household cleaning products are another significant source of toxins. Many mainstream cleaners and disinfectants contain harsh chemicals that can harm lung health and disrupt hormone function. Creating homemade cleaners using vinegar combined with antibacterial and antifungal essential oils such as eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree oil provides a natural disinfectant solution without compromising efficacy. Blueland dishwasher detergent tablets stand out as effective and residue-free, even in hard water conditions, exemplifying the importance of selecting trusted toxin-free cleaning agents. Laundry detergents can also harbor harmful additives; thus, using unscented, natural options like Molly’s Suds enhanced with washing soda ensures deep cleaning while being gentle on skin and safer for the environment. For personal fragrance, switching from fragranced candles, which are major endocrine disruptors, to essential oil diffusers allows customizable scents and a toxin-free atmosphere, with brands like Plant Therapy offering high-quality pure essential oils. Personal care products, particularly deodorants, often contain aluminum compounds linked to neurotoxicity and diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Aluminum-free deodorants like Salt & Stone provide effective odor control without these risks, featuring appealing scents like Santal & Vetiver. Tallow, a traditional fat, is experiencing a resurgence as a base for homemade moisturizers and lotions. It offers skin benefits, especially when infused with skin-friendly essential oils like frankincense. Tallow-based products avoid the hormone-disrupting chemicals often found in commercial skin care, making it an excellent choice for sensitive or postpartum skin. Looking ahead, further reducing toxin exposure can include investing in stainless steel cookware to replace non-stick options that release harmful chemicals, adopting cloth diapers to limit waste and chemical exposure for infants, and installing water filters to mitigate chlorine and other contaminants in hard water. These steps contribute to a holistic approach in lowering household toxins. Ultimately, transitioning to a lower toxin lifestyle is a gradual process that respects previous purchases and knowledge gaps. By adopting these informed swaps, individuals can significantly enhance health and wellbeing while supporting a cleaner, safer environment.

we recently decided to start switching to lower toxin living and we've actually decided to start using castilie soap for almost everything! plus it saves us a lot of money on all sorts of different cleaning products! I just buy a big jug, dilute and add essential oils as needed, and I've got dish soap, hand soap, laundry soap, shampoo, body wash, ect. without having to buy 500 different bottles with a million extra chemicals. also wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets! they're better for, the environment, your health, and your wallet
