sketchbook flip through
We’ll see if I can fill this up by the end of the year!
Hey everyone! So, like many of you, I have a brand new my Sketch BOOK and a big goal: to fill it completely by the end of the year! It sounds simple, but keeping the inspiration flowing can be tough. I’ve been trying out different strategies to make sure my sketchbook isn't just full, but also aesthetically pleasing and a true reflection of my creative journey. One of the biggest game-changers for me has been embracing specific aesthetic themes. Instead of just drawing random things, I pick a weekly or monthly theme. For example, last month was 'Cozy Autumn Vibes,' where I sketched everything from warm drinks and fallen leaves to comfy sweaters and rainy window scenes. This really helped give my pages a cohesive, aesthetic feel. Other themes you could try are 'Botanical Wonders,' 'Urban Exploration,' 'Fantasy Creatures,' or even 'Everyday Objects Reimagined.' Having a theme makes it easier to brainstorm ideas and keeps your work looking intentional. Another great way to get those aesthetic sketchbook ideas flowing is to create visual prompts. I love making mood boards, either digitally on Pinterest or physically with magazine cutouts. Seeing a collection of images, colors, and textures instantly sparks new ideas. For example, if I'm going for a 'vintage travel' aesthetic, I'll collect old postcards, train tickets, and sepia-toned photos. Then, I’ll challenge myself to incorporate those elements into my drawings, maybe even adding faux stamps or handwritten notes. Don't forget about incorporating different mediums! While pencils and pens are staples, trying out watercolors, gouache, pastels, or even collage can drastically elevate your sketchbook's aesthetic. I recently started adding small fabric swatches and dried flowers to some pages, and it instantly gave them a unique, tactile quality. It’s all about experimenting and finding what resonates with your personal style. To keep my my Sketch BOOK looking consistent and inspiring, I also pay attention to layout and composition. Even simple things like using a consistent border style, adding handwritten quotes, or creating mini-collections of similar objects on a single page can make a huge difference. Sometimes, I’ll dedicate a spread just to color swatches or hand-lettered fonts, treating them as art pieces in themselves. And for those days when inspiration completely dries up? That’s when I turn to quick, low-pressure exercises. Drawing my morning coffee, sketching a friend’s pet from a photo, or doing a 5-minute blind contour drawing of my hand. These small, consistent efforts add up and help maintain that 'full by year-end' goal, while still contributing to the overall aesthetic. Remember, your sketchbook is a safe space for exploration, not just finished masterpieces!
