That stomach drop feeling when someone asks you to do something isn’t anxiety or overthinking.

It’s your nervous system giving you real-time feedback that you’re already at capacity and can’t take one more thing.

At first, I tried pushing through with sheer willpower or by setting stricter boundaries, but that only helped temporarily. What truly made a difference was learning to recognize this physical cue as a prompt to actively discharge the stress built up throughout the day. Techniques that helped me include deep breathing exercises, short mindfulness breaks, and gentle movement like stretching or a quick walk. These actions facilitate the nervous system's natural stress release process. Importantly, this approach respects how the body and nervous system function together instead of forcing through with discipline alone. Understanding this connection between the stomach drop feeling and nervous system capacity has been transformative. It shifted my approach from trying to suppress the feeling to responding to it compassionately and proactively. This not only reduces the immediate discomfort but also helps prevent longer-term burnout. For anyone experiencing persistent feelings of overwhelm or "stomach drops" in response to daily demands, tuning into these physical signals and learning how to discharge stored stress can be a game-changer for overall mental and physical health.
