Products That Saved My Dead Hair🫶🏼

2024/9/14 Edited to

... Read moreWe've all been there: staring at our reflection, wondering how our once vibrant hair turned into a brittle, 'dead' mess. Especially for those of us who love to bleach, the journey from luscious locks to dry, damaged strands can feel like a one-way trip. I personally experienced this; my hair was so fried from bleaching that I had chunks missing and had to chop it all off. But here's the good news: repairing severely damaged hair, even while still bleaching, is absolutely possible with the right approach and products. Understanding what 'dead' hair truly means is the first step. When hair becomes severely damaged, its protective outer layer (cuticle) is lifted or even completely gone, exposing the inner cortex. This leads to a loss of moisture, protein, and elasticity, making hair feel rough, look dull, and become prone to breakage. Different hair types react distinctively to damage. Fine hair might snap easily, while coarse hair might become incredibly dry and stiff. My light blonde, fine-to-medium hair, for instance, became incredibly fragile and developed split ends all the way up the shaft. My journey to revive my hair involved a strategic arsenal of treatments, focusing on rebuilding bonds and restoring moisture. Here’s what made a significant difference: 1. Rebuilding with Bonding Treatments: These were an absolute game-changer. Products designed to repair the broken disulfide bonds within the hair shaft are crucial for chemically damaged hair. I incorporated bonding treatments into my routine 1-2 times a month. They don't just coat the hair; they actually work to mend the internal structure, making hair stronger and more resilient. For extremely compromised hair, starting with weekly treatments and then reducing frequency as hair health improves can be beneficial. Look for ingredients like bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate or similar bond-repairing complexes. 2. Gentle Cleansing and Deep Conditioning: You might think all shampoos and conditioners are the same, but for damaged hair, choosing wisely is essential. I switched to ultra-moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. These cleanse without stripping away natural oils, which damaged hair desperately needs to retain. Following up with a rich conditioner helps to smooth the cuticle and add a layer of protection. This gentle approach is important for all hair types prone to dryness or breakage, preventing further stress during washing. 3. Nourishing Oils for Scalp and Strands: Healthy hair starts at the scalp! I integrated a scalp and hair strengthening oil, applying it directly to my scalp and often sleeping with it for a few days before washing. This helped stimulate hair growth and provided a healthy environment for new strands. Organic castor oil became another weekly ritual. I'd gently heat it and apply it to my scalp, letting its rich nutrients penetrate. For the hair strands themselves, argan oil hair treatments became a daily essential. I used one specifically for smoothing and repairing dry hair, and a lighter version for everyday use to reduce frizz without weighing down my hair or making it greasy. Argan oil is particularly fantastic for many hair types, from fine to thick, as it's rich in vitamins and antioxidants that protect and hydrate. 4. The Power of Deep Moisture Masks: Beyond regular conditioner, a deep moisture hair mask became a non-negotiable weekly step. The one I found most effective contained avocado, argan oil, and monoi oil. These ingredients are champions for hydration and repair, infusing the hair with much-needed moisture and emollients. After shampooing, I'd apply a generous amount, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends, and leave it on for 10-20 minutes. This intensive treatment significantly improved my hair’s softness, shine, and manageability. Beyond specific products, a holistic approach is key. Minimizing heat styling, protecting hair from UV rays, and being incredibly gentle when detangling are all vital. Remember, hair repair is a journey, not a sprint. Be patient, consistent, and kind to your hair, and you’ll see incredible transformations, bringing your 'dead' hair back to life.

Argon oil gave me a severe rash/burn, just from one use. If you have sensitive scalp (I have eczema) please use with caution

A person's back shows long, light-colored damaged hair, with an inset close-up revealing severe thinning and breakage on the scalp. The image highlights the impact of 6 years of bleaching, hair extension damage, and diabetic hair thinning and loss.
This image explains how avoiding heat helps hair recovery. High temperatures alter hair's protein structure, convert α-keratin to β-keratin, weaken hair, open cuticles, and strip natural moisture and oils, leading to dryness and damage.
The image illustrates the benefits of using a shower filter for hair health. It removes contaminants like chlorine, lead, and heavy metals that can damage hair, making it rough and dry, and supports a healthy scalp for growth and shine.
How I saved my damaged hair
I absolutely destroyed my hair. I used to bleach my hair every 8 weeks for about 6 years and being a type 1 diabetic (I was newly diagnosed and had uncontrolled blood sugar in the beginning) led to my hair having constant breakage, thinning, never growing, and feeling like straw. I thought the cau
