Social Work Overload?!

#letschat I’ve been doing social services for practically 12 years since graduating undergrad. I love helping my community, especially in my current position doing child protective services. But as I’m rolling into year 4 in CPS, my health and mental are declining and I find it soooo hard to simply enjoy life. Seriously, is my passion tearing me down??

Having ADHD, depression and anxiety don’t make it any easier because I find it hard to make myself wake up every morning and leave the house by a certain time. Even when I’m off and want to go somewhere to run errands or for fun, it literally takes me over half the day to leave my house and when I finally do, I’m rushing to get somewhere before the place closes or the event is over. I take medications for my diagnoses, see my physician monthly, meet weekly with a therapist yet I’m still struggling.

Not to mention, I had a mental breakdown in July where I had a severe anxiety attack and it took two hours to get me normalized. Because of this, I went on leave for almost 8 weeks. I’ve only been back in my SW role for a little under two months and I’m feeling those old symptoms resurfacing and the job becoming harder to get the simplest things done.

The other day I took a Mental Health First Aid class and the question that came up was: “what do you do for self-care?” I couldn’t think of a thing because whenever I try to get something accomplished, I’m either too tired, I have an assignment to get done, or I’m too broke. I’ve been slowly putting myself out there to make friends and I’ve also gone on two interviews and a 3rd one in a few days. So I’m not worried of switching jobs, but I don’t want to lose it before I can see better days. How do y’all handle this type of ordeal?

... Read moreIt's so validating to see discussions around the intense feelings that come with social work! When I read about the 'sweating emoji' and 'sad~ lemons' in that image, it just clicked. It's like, sometimes a simple emoji or a brief visual can perfectly capture the overwhelming exhaustion and emotional toll of this job when words just aren't enough. We're often expected to be strong and resilient for others, but who's there for us when we feel that 'social work overload' hitting hard? I've been in similar shoes, feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders and wondering if my passion was slowly, surely, tearing me down. The struggle to even get out of bed, the anxiety before a new day, the constant questioning of whether you're doing enough – it's all part of the job's hidden curriculum. What I've learned, sometimes the hard way, is that acknowledging these feelings, even with a simple emoji to a trusted colleague, is the first step. It's okay to not be okay, and it's essential to find small ways to express that. For anyone else feeling this deep sense of burnout, especially when you're juggling so much, here are a few things that have helped me, even when I felt too tired, too broke, or too busy: Micro Self-Care Moments: We hear "self-care" and think spa days or vacations, but sometimes it's just 5 minutes. A quick walk around the block, listening to a favorite song, a few deep breaths, or even just stepping away from your screen for a moment to stretch. These small actions can prevent the build-up of stress. Boundary Setting (Even Small Ones): This is a tough one in our field. But it can be as simple as not checking work emails after a certain hour, or taking your full lunch break without distractions. Protecting your personal time is crucial for mental resilience. Connecting with Peers: Finding other social workers who get it is a lifeline. Whether it's a formal support group or just an informal chat with a colleague, sharing your experiences can reduce feelings of isolation. Sometimes, just knowing someone else feels that 'sweating emoji' feeling too makes a huge difference. Professional Help is NOT a Failure: Like the original post mentions, seeing a therapist and physician, taking medication – these are not signs of weakness, but acts of strength. Prioritizing your mental health is paramount. If you've had a mental breakdown or are feeling those old symptoms resurfacing, please reach out. Re-evaluating Your "Why": Sometimes, stepping back and remembering why you entered social work can reignite that spark or help you realize if it's time for a change. It's okay if your "why" has evolved, or if the current environment no longer supports your well-being. Exploring new opportunities, like the author is doing with job interviews, is a brave step towards "better days." This journey through social work overload is incredibly challenging, and it's a testament to your strength that you're still here, still fighting for your clients, and still asking for help. Let's keep these conversations going, because together, we can navigate the tough realities of this vital profession.

i totally understand the self-care part (i’m a grad student doing internship for clinical mental health counseling, and i work as an RBT doing behavior therapy for children with autism). i feel like i have to get things done to “earn” my self-care, which sucks!
