We Were Liars by E. Lockhart felt like the perfect summer read to start with!
I read this book when it originally came out. It was amazing and I was shocked by the twist and turns that it takes. At this point I have no clue what exactly happens because it’s been so long so I’m excited to go on the journey!
You follow the main character and her cousins at her family’s Summer island. That’s right the family owns an entire island. Did I mention they’re just a little too perfect. So perfect that her father decided to leave her and her mother right before they were headed for the summer island. He said the pressure to be prefect was just too much for him. Just like band camp you’re not gonna believe what happened last summer or was it this summer? It’s hard to tell but I’m going to get to the bottom of it!
... Read moreIf you’re anything like me, you picked up E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars years ago and were absolutely captivated by its 'thrilling, beautiful, and blisteringly smart' narrative, as John Green so aptly put it. The book truly is unforgettable, leaving a lasting impression with its atmospheric island setting, the privileged yet deeply flawed Sinclair family, and of course, that jaw-dropping twist! The way it explores themes of family secrets, grief, and the unreliable nature of memory makes it a standout. If you finished We Were Liars and immediately craved another psychological mystery with dark secrets and unexpected turns, you're in luck! I’ve put together a few personal recommendations that capture a similar vibe.
First up, if you loved the isolated, atmospheric setting and the unraveling of dark secrets among a group, you absolutely have to pick up The Guest List by Lucy Fokley. Imagine a wedding on a remote Irish island, where old resentments and hidden motives simmer beneath the surface. Just like *We Were Liars*, this book throws a group of interconnected characters together in a picturesque but unsettling location, leading to a shocking revelation. The tension builds beautifully, and you'll find yourself questioning everyone’s motives, much like you did with the Sinclairs. It delivers that same delicious sense of foreboding and a complex web of lies that makes for a truly gripping read.
Next, for those who appreciated the high-stakes drama and the uncovering of secrets within a younger, intertwined group, One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus is a fantastic choice. This YA mystery starts with five students walking into detention, but only four walk out alive. The deceased is a gossip king who was about to reveal damaging secrets about the other four. Sound familiar? It’s a modern take on The Breakfast Club meets *Pretty Little Liars*, offering a compelling whodunit with plenty of twists and turns. It delves into the pressure of appearances and the dark truths people hide, echoing the themes of perfection and deception found in *We Were Liars*.
Finally, if the blend of old secrets, a unique setting, and a clever mystery captured your imagination, I recommend diving into Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. This series kicks off at Ellingham Academy, a prestigious, isolated boarding school founded by a millionaire who, along with his family, mysteriously disappeared years ago. A true-crime enthusiast and new student, Stevie Bell, arrives determined to solve the decades-old cold case. Like *We Were Liars*, Truly Devious masterfully weaves together past and present, revealing layers of secrets and a captivating, atmospheric mystery. The characters are incredibly distinct, and the puzzle is genuinely engaging, making it another unforgettable read that will keep you guessing until the very end.
Finding books that live up to the unique experience of We Were Liars can be tough, but these three offer similar thrills, intricate plots, and the satisfaction of uncovering deeply buried truths. Happy reading, and let me know if you’ve found any other gems that remind you of this amazing book!
