They Called This Fabric Ugly—So I Made the Top Anyway 🌸

This fabric reminds me so much of my grandma’s signature style. When I finally found it, I felt that familiar spark—the kind that instantly connects you to where you came from.

A few people who saw me working with it told me it was ugly. But I couldn’t let their opinions erase the feeling it gave me.

So I made the top anyway—and it became one of my favourites. ❤️

Not everything you love has to make sense to everyone else. Sometimes a colour, print, or piece of fabric holds a memory that only you can understand.

If something speaks to you, keep going. Create with it. Wear it. Celebrate it.

That’s how we keep our heritage, our intuition, and our passion for our culture alive.

Would you wear this floral print?

... Read moreChoosing fabric that resonates emotionally can transform your sewing projects and personal wardrobe into meaningful expressions of heritage and identity. When I first found a floral print that reminded me of my grandmother’s style, it wasn’t universally admired—some even said it was ugly. Yet, the emotional connection I felt couldn’t be ignored. This experience highlighted the importance of trusting your own aesthetic intuition rather than conforming to popular opinion. Floral fabrics are timeless, but the specific patterns that carry family or cultural significance add a layer of storytelling to what we wear. This makes slow fashion especially powerful—it allows time to curate pieces that honor our roots, rather than fast trends that get forgotten quickly. Wearing clothing made from fabrics with personal meaning can spark conversations and keep heritage alive in everyday life. In my journey creating the floral top, I realized that handmade fashion isn’t just about the finished garment; it’s about the memories and emotions stitched into every seam. When someone told me the fabric was ugly, it was a reminder that fashion is subjective and deeply personal. Embracing this helped me confidently wear my meaningful creation, turning it into a favorite piece of my wardrobe. If you have fabrics that reflect your family history or unique taste, don't hesitate to use them. Whether bold or subtle, these fabrics tell your story and enrich your personal style. Celebrate your creative journey with pieces that hold memories and pride—because fashion isn’t just about looks, it’s about connection and self-expression. Would you dare to create and wear something that might not be widely admired but means the world to you? I found the answer in my floral top, and it’s empowering to honor what you love, no matter what others say.
